Role of joints in the structure of antique wooden panel parquets on the example of parquets from Przewrotne manor house Panel parquets can have one-layer or two-layer structure. Sophisticated patterns of antique panels are the reason of dividing them into many elements. During centuries, the one-layer panel elements, the structural layer in two-layer parquets and the panels between one another, were connected with a system of joints. It wasn’t until the 1930s when mosaic parquet that did not need joints was invented in Switzerland. Research on the structure of decorative antique wooden parquets has revealed that the structure of parquets in the Przewrotne manor house is diversified, and some of the panels do not have profiled joints. The innovative character of the structural solutions applied in parquets from Przewrotne requires a deeper analysis in order to check whether it was justified to use the complicated woodwork joints, which made it difficult to manufacture the parquet. The numerical analysis was performed with the use of FEM in Autodesk Inventor Professional environment.

Modelling the Swelling Process of Wooden Parquet Panels from Antique Manor Houses of South-Eastern Poland We studied the designs of parquets from manor houses located in South-Eastern Poland that contained preserved 19th century decorative wooden parquets. The parquets are made of panels with different patterns. The parquets were analysed as to their patterns, the wood species used and the principles of combining wood species; the section type was also taken into account. Wood, being a hygroscopic and anisotropic material, is very difficult for numerical simulations, due to the large amount of data that need to be taken into consideration. Big differences between the shrinkage and swelling coefficients of different wood species and also within one species depending on the direction of anatomical elements, force us to assume some simplifications. Therefore, at this moment there is no direct manner of performing simulations of the changes in dimensions caused by humidity variations. The programmes ANSYS and ABAQUS allow us to define the material entirely from basics, but it is not an easy process. In case of programmes that do not have the function of user’s material, the only solution is to use the tools for simulation of thermal expansion. The numerical simulations of swelling were carried out with the programme SolidWorks Simulation 2011.

Characteristics of the properties of traditional finishing coatings used to protect wood in antique parquets considering the possibility of their application in buildings under reconstruction. In antique manor houses, traditional surface finishing techniques were used. The oldest historical method of parquet finishing is varnishing (repeated soaking with hot varnish until full saturation of wood surface) and waxing. The parquet finishing has an essential influence on its durability. We tested the resistance to abrasion and resistance to scratches, as well as the colour and gloss of samples taken from 19th century antique buildings before and after covering their surface with wax and varnish.
