Intensive Animal Farming Operations – a Preliminary Analysis of a Number of Farm Animals, Ammonia Emission Values Variability and Methods of Reducing Odor Emissions and Assessing Health Impact Taking into Account Possible Solutions in Poland and Ukraine

The article seeks to review the standards (emission and immission) and legal solutions relating to odour-active compounds, as well asanalyse the variability in the number of farmed animals and the emission of ammonia in Poland and Ukraine. Furthermore, the article characterizesodour emission factors, methods of health risk assessment, ways of limiting emission of odorous compounds from animal farming facilities. The analysis indicated the necessity of applying good practices available in reference documents – including those drawn up by environmental agencies – and scientific works, as such practices may significantly contribute to minimising the impact of animal farming facilities on people and the environment. The introduction of, inter alia, immission standards (reference values) expressed in ouE/m3 in the legal regimes of the EU and Ukraine would also render it possible to carry out an assessment of odours treated as a mixture present in ambient air and optimise the assessment of odour nuisance and thus the discomfort directly affecting the well-being and health of inhabitants of areas in the vicinity of farming facilities.

W gospodarstwach zajmujących się produkcją roślinną jednym z istotnych problemów jest równoważenie bilansu nawozowego w glebie. W gospodarstwach towarowych bilans ten jest uzyskiwany przez nawożenie mineralne z uzupełnieniem nawozami organicznymi, natomiast w gospodarstwach produkujących żywność metodami ekologicznymi podstawą jest nawożenie nawozami organicznymi, zapobiegające mineralizacji gleby. Jedną z metod uzyskiwania nawozów organicznych jest kompostowanie. W zależności od typu gospodarstwa, rodzaju i wielkości produkcji powinno stosować się odpowiednie metody kompostowania zapewniające: jak największe wykorzystanie odpadowej masy organicznej produkowanej w gospodarstwie, minimalizację strat składników nawozowych (azot, fosfor, potas) powstających w trakcie procesu kompostowania i nawożenia, wykorzystanie ciepła i gazów powstających w trakcie kompostowania z jednoczesnym ograniczeniem ich emisji do atmosfery oraz uzyskanie dojrzałego kompostu jak najlepszej jakości. Na świecie i w Polsce rozwijane są metody kompostowania w pryzmach oraz w komorach zamkniętych. W opracowaniu zostały omówione różne metody kompostowania, możliwe do zastosowania w gospodarstwach ekologicznych i uzyskiwane w nich rezultaty.

An important problem on the farms engaged in crop production is to equilibrate the fertilizer balance in soil. On market oriented farms such a balance is achieved by mineral fertilization supplemented with the organic fertilizers. However, on the farms producing food with application of ecological methods the use of organic fertilizers is a basis. Composting of organic matter is an useful way to getting the organic fertilizers. Depending on the type of farm, kind and volume of crop production, adequate composting methods ought to be used which would ensure: - the highest utilization of waste organic matter produced on the farm, - minimizing the losses of nutrients (nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium) originated in the process of composting and fertilization, - utilization of the heat and gases arising in composting process at simultaneous reduction of their emission to atmosphere, - getting ready fermented compost of the best quality. Either in Poland and in the other countries there are being developed the methods of composting in piles and in closed chambers. Various composting methods possible to application on ecological farms as well as the results of their, use were discussed in this paper.
