Sustainability or fun? : recreational angling in Marine Protected Areas

Gökova Bay MPAs (southern Aegean Sea, Turkey) include six different no-take zones (NTZs: Akyaka, Çamlı, Akbük, Boncuk-Karaca, İngiliz Limanı, Bördübet), in four of which shore angling is permitted (Akyaka, Çamlı, Akbük, Boncuk-Karaca). This study determined the total catch and size of fish caught in the Akyaka MPA during recreational fishing. In total, fish representing 22 species belonging to 10 families were caught and most of them were smaller than their length at first maturity. The projection showed that the total catch weight reached significant values for recreational angling in the Akyaka MPA. The results of this study indicate that recreational angling may pose a threat to both MPAs and no-take zones, causing them to deviate from their primary conservation goal due to the harvesting of juveniles by recreational anglers.

The analysis of ecosystem services in the Drawa River drainage with regard to canoeing and angling indicated that anglers found lake areas most attractive whereas canoeists preferred river sections. The use of the Drawa River only by the two branches (only the basic range) of economy and region development generates profi t of at least 1.5 million PLN within one year. The aforementioned analysis excludes indirect costs which may be equal to or exceed the value obtained directly from the sale of angling licenses and canoe rentals.

Człowiek eksploatuje zasoby przyrodnicze również tam, gdzie na pierwszy rzut oka, nie jest to uzasadnione zapewnianiem sobie środków do egzystencji. Do takich działań zaliczyć można wędkarstwo, rozumiane jako forma rekreacji lub sportu związanego z użytkowaniem zasobów ryb. Perspektywa zmniejszenia liczebności, a nawet wyginięcia w wyniku przełowienia, wielu lokalnych populacji gatunków cennych wędkarsko sprawia, że indywidualni wędkarze coraz częściej zauważają swoją odpowiedzialność za stan środowiska, a świadomość ekologiczna prowadzi do konkretnych zachowań na łowisku. Jednym z przejawów troski o środowisko jest, coraz popularniejsze w naszym kraju, dobrowolne stosowanie wytycznych C&R (Catch and release – złów i wypuść), zasad postępowania ze złowionymi rybami, które wspomagają zrównoważoną eksploatację ichtiofauny. W ankiecie przeprowadzonej wśród wędkarzy łowiących na wodach Podkarpacia, badano stosunek do stosowania poszczególnych zasad C&R.

The man exploits natural resources also when, at first sight, it is not necessary to maintain his existence. Angling, understood as a form of recreation or sport, associated with fish stocks usage, should be classified as that kind of activity. The prospect of significant reduction, or even extinction as a result of overharvest of many local populations of valuable species, cause that individual anglers more often recognizing their responsibility for the environment and leads towards increasing of environmental awareness and proper behavior in the fishery ground. One of the expressions of solicitude for the environment is, more and more popular among polish anglers, application to Catch and Release principles, which support the sustainable exploitation of fish fauna. In a survey conducted among anglers fishing in the Subcarpathian region (Poland), they were asked about the knowledge and approach to chosen C&R rules.
