The idea of strengthening RC bridge spans with a stay structure has been borrowed from wooden bridges. The paper presents an analysis of the efficiency of RC bridge span strengthening with stays in the aspect of the possibility of beam cracking. This refers to cracking in the upper parts of beams and deck slab in the sections above additional supports. On the basis of the results of the analysis it can be stated that the use of stays as additional supporting elements can be an efficient way of improving the carrying capacity of simple span RC girder bridges. This has been confirmed by observation of objects strengthened in this way after many years of operation. The efficiency of strengthening depends on span length 1, location of support (and the relation a : b : a connected with it), stays inclination angle a together with the material of which the stays are made (different values of AT). It should be emphasized that throughout the whole range of temperature variations and useful loads, beams separating off the stays must be prevented. Therefore preliminary effort of stays is recommended to keep the support with stays active, even at the lowest temperature.
