As an element of structural and material solutions, aluminium and glass façades are the mainstay of urban architecture; they are especially used in public utility buildings. The article provides a review of architectural styles and trends of the 20th century, when exterior elevations began to take the form of aluminium and glass façades. It illustrates the main architectural trends of urban architecture in the 20th century and their evolution throughout the years. Furthermore, it specifies and refers to the architecture of the 20th and 21st centuries in Kraków and presents selected public utility buildings which have become an integral part of architecture in this city.

The paper discusses the issues of corrosion, including pitting corrosion on aluminum facade, depending of the environmental impacts. The environmental impacts on the aluminum facades were described. The assessment of aggressiveness of the environment and the types of corrosion protection of aluminum were presented.

Elewacja to w wielu przypadkach wizytówka budynku decydująca o jego wyglądzie. Dotyczy to przede wszystkim fasad, których mianem określa się elewacje szczególnie dekoracyjne i efektowne. Interesująca forma i kolorystyka elewacji często przyćmiewa inne elementy architektury i konstrukcji, zarówno obiektów historycznych jak i nowoczesnych. Jednym z elementów, których właściwości decydują o możliwościach osiągnięcia zamierzonych efektów w zakresie kształtowania elewacji, jest zastosowany materiał. Przez wieki elewacje rozmaitych budowli wykonywano przede wszystkim z kamienia. Obecnie obserwuje się zastosowanie do tego celu wielu innych materiałów, a jednym z nich jest aluminium i jego stopy.

Fasade is often a showpiece of a building which determines its appearance, particularly in case of particularly decorative and spectacular fasades. An interesting form and colour of the façade often overshadows other architectural elements in modern and historic buildings. Fasade material is one of the elements which properties determine the possibility of achieving the desired effects. Since time immemorial the fasades have been made mostly of stone. Now other materials are coming to the fore, one of them being aluminium and its alloys.
