Recently, some major changes have occurred in the structure of the European foundry industry, such as a rapid development in the production of castings from compacted graphite iron and light alloys at the expense of limiting the production of steel castings. This created a significant gap in the production of heavy steel castings (exceeding the weight of 30 Mg) for the metallurgical, cement and energy industries. The problem is proper moulding technology for such heavy castings, whose solidification and cooling time may take even several days, exposing the moulding material to a long-term thermal and mechanical load. Owing to their technological properties, sands with organic binders (synthetic resins) are the compositions used most often in industrial practice. Their main advantages include high strength, good collapsibility and knocking out properties, as well as easy mechanical reclamation. The main disadvantage of these sands is their harmful effect on the environment, manifesting itself at various stages of the casting process, especially during mould pouring. This is why new solutions are sought for sands based on organic binders to ensure their high technological properties but at the same time less harmfulness for the environment. This paper discusses the possibility of reducing the harmful effect of sands with furfuryl binders owing to the use of resins with reduced content of free furfuryl alcohol and hardeners with reduced sulphur content. The use of alkyd binder as an alternative to furfuryl binder has also been proposed and possible application of phenol-formaldehyde resins was considered.

W artykule przedstawiono informacje na temat jednego z najstarszych i najdłużej stosowanych typów żywic lakierniczych - żywic alkidowych. Omówione zostały metody otrzymywania, typy, właściwości i zastosowanie żywic alkidowych oraz możliwości technologiczne ich modyfikacji. Artykuł jest kolejnym w cyklu zatytułowanym: „Podstawy technologii farb i lakierów”.

The article presents information about one of the oldest and the longest used types of resins - alkyd resins. Article discussed the methods of preparation, types, properties and applications of alkyd resins and the technological possibilities of their modification. The article is the next in a series of articles: Chemistry and Technology of Paints.

Experiments were conducted using (3-aminopropyl) triethoxysilane (APTES) and alkyd resin in order to improve the reactivity of wood protective preparations with wood. The results presented concern a structural analysis (FTIR, AAS) of modified cellulose and wood, both after chemical reactions with silanes and after water extraction. The FTIR spectrum of pine wood powder was presented after a reaction with organosilane preparations and with the addition of alkyd resin, and then after water extraction. The FTIR analysis detected vibrations of Si-C, Si-O and N-H groups, indicating permanent bonding with the organosilane preparation. The presence of bands at 710 cm-1 (characteristic of vibrations of the silicon bond with an atom of carbon and oxygen) and at 1600-1580 cm-1 (characteristic of deformation vibrations of N–H coming from the amine group) confirmed the reactivity of these preparations with the wood. The results of atomic absorption spectrometry confirmed the stability of the organosilane bonds with the cellulose and the wood.

Sykatywy są powszechnie yżywanymi środkami pomocniczymi odpowiedzialnymi za tworzenie powłoki w rozpuszczalnikowych i wodnych wyrobach alkidowych. W typowej recepturze farby alkidowej stosowane są trzy rodzaje sykatyw - aktywne, pomocnicze i zwilżające. Zawartość sykatyw w recepturze wpływa w bardzo istotny sposób na właściwości farby i otrzymanej z niej powłoki. Pomimo istnienia wytycznych opracowanych przez producentów sykatyw zawartość poszczególnych sykatyw w recepturze powinna być określona na drodze doświadczalnej.

Oxidative polymerisation catalysed by metal cations is a curing process in the case of alkyd resins. Development and properties of driers used in solvent borne and waterborne alkyd systems are discussed. Different classes of siccatives and mechanisms of their action are described. Practical information concerning drying process and defects because of driers misuse are listed.

Synthesis and properties of high solids alkyd resins of star like structure are presented. Alkyd resins of this structure allow to formulate of high solids alkyd paints with content of VOC below 100g/l. These resins are very promising in aspects of lowering of emission of solvents from paints and environmental protection.
