The institute is the heir to a long-standing tradition of agricultural sciences in Puławy. It is here that the Polish agrometeorology was born and since its very beginning it has had a recognized place in the institute’s research effort. The reason for that is that the technologies used in agricultural production are based on the understanding of climatic conditions and of the crop eiwironmental reąuirements. Over the last five years the major achievements of agrometeorology in Puławy included the development of crop yield prediction methods, the development o f the Poland Agroclimate Atlas, description of the multi-component agroclimate model based on GIS procedures, empirical verification of the mechanistic growth models for winter w heat as related to weather, determination of the impact of expected climate changes on Polish agriculture, description of the informative role of solar radiation in plant growth and development. The plans for the future include further expansion of GIS methods and their application in the upgrading of the classification of Polish agroclimate and in the development of comprehensive programmes for optimization of crop production, development of yield predicition methods using a combination of simulation models and teledetection, development of empirical and statistical procedures to predict crop quality, research on spectral composition of solar radiation as affected by weather and determination of the effect of solar radiation on growth, development habit and yields of crops.
