A rise in international trade has increased the need for the transportation of perishable products from producers to end-users in distant locations. Such transportation requires extensive logistics planning to ensure the integrity of the goods transported. The article aims to identify and highlight key strengths and weaknesses of the company, and to identify opportunities and threats that can contribute to improving the competitiveness and thus the quality of services provided. The scope of the data included domestic and international transport of two product groups: food and agricultural products. Data were obtained from Eurostat and the Polish Central Statistical Office (GUS) for the years 2010–2015. In order to determine the strategy and enterprise that specializes in the transport of food products, a SWOT analysis was used. The SWOT analysis points clearly to the direction of the business’s development towards strong expansion in the market which is demonstrated by the high figures for the strengths and opportunities (9.48). Compared with 2014, 2015 saw a 14.2% increase in the proportion of foods with a parallel drop in the transport of domestic agricultural produce by nearly 5%. The volume of road transport expressed in tonne/kilometre was 14.5% of the total of EU transport which places Poland second amongst the 28 EU states, after Germany and before Spain and France. The paper demonstrates that the most advantageous development strategy for a domestic transport provider is anaggressive (maxi–maxi) strategy to fully benefit from the opportunities with the use of its strengths.

The paper deals with various types of buckwheat products (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench), which have been determined with mechanical and physical properties in order to provide useful data for engineers to design structures of used equipment, harvesting and other processing technologies. Buckwheat is currently a well-sought-after food in the field of healthy nutrition, especially because of its high fiber content, iron and potassium. Among the tested samples were, for example, buckwheat hazelnuts, chips, flakes and others. In the above mentioned, the parameters of the linear dimensions, the Carrs index, the Hausner ratio and the flow rate were measured and compared. The influence of geometric parameters of buckwheat products was determined on mechanical and physical properties. The first results showed that the set parameters were statistically different for each type of buckwheat. On the basis of measured data, a simulation of the flow of a specific buckwheat sample was performed. The discrete element (DEM) method used for this purpose appears to be an appropriate tool for transporting these agricultural products.

Artykuł dotyczy różnych rodzajów produktów z gryki (Fagopyrum esculentum Moench), które zostały określone za pomocą właściwości mechanicznych i fizycznych w celu dostarczenia inżynierom przydatnych danych do projektowania struktur używanych urządzeń, zbiorów i innych technologii przetwarzania. Gryka jest obecnie popularnym pożywieniem w dziedzinie zdrowego żywienia, szczególnie ze względu na wysoką zawartość błonnika, żelaza i potasu. Wśród badanych próbek były orzechy laskowe, gryka, chipsy, płatki i inne. Zmierzono i porównano parametry wymiarów liniowych, wskaźnik Carrsa, współczynnik Hausnera i natężenie przepływu. Określono wpływ parametrów geometrycznych produktów z gryki na właściwości mechaniczne i fizyczne. Wyniki wykazały, że zmierzone i założone parametry były statystycznie różne dla każdego rodzaju gryki. Na podstawie zmierzonych danych przeprowadzono symulację przepływu określonej próbki gryki. Zastosowana w tym celu metoda elementów dyskretnych (DEM) wydaje się odpowiednim narzędziem do opisu transportu tych produktów rolnych.

Propensity of cargoes to self-heating is determined by many factors which can be divided into two main types - properties of the cargo and environment/storage conditions. Some agricultural products are susceptible to self-heating which can cause many serious problems during handling, storage and sea transportation of such commodities. Palm kernel shells (PKS) have been shipped in bulk since 2007 but they are not a currently listed cargo in the IMSBC. PKS are a natural by-product of palm oil processing and differ materially from the palm kernel expellers currently regulated by the IMSBC Code. However, their specific characteristics and negative external influences may cause them to behave like a substance from Class 4.2 (Substances liable to spontaneous combustion) or MHB cargo. Due to the importance of spontaneous combustion, particularly with respect to the storage and sea transportation of PKS, an investigation has been conducted.
