The sintering tendency of a fuel ash is one of the most important factors of fireside slagging and fouling problems or bed agglomeration in steam boilers. In this paper the sintering tendency was predicted by a laboratory test method based on compression strength measurements and chemical composition analysis of the ashes. For the study were chosen six ashes from bituminous and lignite coals, two biomass and select of coal and biomass blends. The compression strength test showed significant differences in the measured sintering tendencies for the various ashes and their select blends. The sintering tendency seemed also to correlate well with chemical ratios of ashes.

In this paper has been showed a new experimental method that determines the sintering temperature of fuel ash. This technique is based on pressure drop measurements across the heat-treated ash sample, compressed in an alumina tube. The sintering temperatures of ashes measured with pressure drop technique were compared with standard ash fusion test (PN-ISO 540:2001) and compression strength test. The standard ash fusion test generally showed higher temperatures than the non-standard sintering test. The pressure drop technique is relatively quick and more sensitive than compressive strength technique and can be applied with chemical composition analysis of the ashes to predict onset of bed agglomeration, fouling or slagging in steam boilers.
