Niniejsza praca przedstawia osobiste spojrzenie autora na rozwój i problemy diagnostyki wibroakustycznej maszyn w ciągu ostatniego półwiecza. Opisuje początki diagnostyki drganiowej maszyn i jej metodologię aż do współczesnych rozwiązań diagnostyki wielowymiarowej i jej problemów.

Paper starts with advent of vibration condition monitoring, dated so early as the first German industry standard VDI 2056 in 1962y. The outline of possible symptoms and they general definition is given at the beginning. Also the application area of vibration condition monitoring is presented, with the main application domain in machinery maintenance. Here the evolution of damage is the main concern, and some models of damage evolution in machines, together vibroacoustic feedback to damage are presented. On that basis, one can make some models of one dimensional diagnostics and forecasting, and symptom limit value determination. This way of making diagnostic inference is currently in use. But for critical machines we should use models and methods with much higher reliability, so we should apply multi symptom observation and multidimensional inference and decision techniques. They can be supported on principal components analysis or singular value decomposition, as it is shown in the paper on some simply examples, taken from vibration condition monitoring area. At the end of the paper, some thinking in the line of artificial intelligence and diagnostic agents application are presented as the first approach to the problem.
