The paper presents the development of research on adsorption processes and thin-layer chromatography in the Department of Physical Chemistry of Maria Curie-Sklodowska University. The studies on chromatography and adsorption were initiated by prof. Andrzej Waksmundzki and his student prof. Jarosław Ościk at the turn of the 1940s and 1950s. Experimental studies in the area of adsorption included adsorption systems such as adsorbent – solutions of non-electrolytes in the entire concentration range, adsorbent – single- and multi-component diluted solutions, and measurements of adsorption equilibrium and kinetics. Methods for the synthesis and modification of various types of materials (silicas, carbons, clays, polymers, composites, nanomaterials) and methods for characterizing the structural and surface properties of adsorbents were developed, and a very effective method for measuring adsorption kinetics was developed. Experimental adsorption data, isotherms and concentration profiles, were analysed using various models and equations.
