Urban Nature as an Active Means of Adapting Public Spaces to Climate Conditions: Case Studies from Copenhagen and Selected Polish Cities

Progressive climate change brings many challenges to cities, which, in an effort to meet them, are looking for ways to create a built environment that is resilient and adapted to change. The subject of the paper is the urban nature, which, skillfully used and introduced into public space, becomes an active tool for adapting cities to future climate conditions. The aim of the paper is to identify key solutions to introduce urban nature into public spaces in the context of model strategic planning and urban design undertaken in cities. To this aim, development strategies, with a particular focus on urban nature, developed in Copenhagen over the past few years, were researched. Of those identified, the directions and actions that address public spaces and holistically link the needs of the built and natural environment with the needs of humans were selected. Research leads to a comparison of the model strategies and selected implementations used in Copenhagen, prioritizing the urban nature, with examples of strategic development policies and adaptation projects implemented in the public spaces of selected Polish cities. The result of the research is an assessment of the completeness of climate change adaptation measures undertaken in Poland, using the potential of urban nature in public spaces and recommendations for updating planning and strategic documents based on Copenhagen's model solutions.

Badania obejmują działania wzmacniające odporność miast, realizowane w ostatnich latach w miastach europejskich oraz planowane w miastach polskich. Celem badań jest analiza i ocena stopnia wpływu działań adaptacyjnych na krajobraz miasta.

The subject of the paper is the city landscape considered in the context of implementing activities that adapt urban spaces to climate change. The research covers activities that strengthen the resilience of cities, which have been carried out in European cities in recent years, as well as those planned in Polish cities. The aim of the study is to analyze and evaluate the degree of influence of adaptation activities on the urban landscape.

Przedmiotem artykułu są działania adaptacyjne do zmian klimatu podejmowane w miastach polskich w kontekście zrównoważonego gospodarowania zasobami wodnymi, terenami zieleni, infrastruktury komunikacyjnej, zrównoważonego zabudowywania miasta oraz miejskiej akupunktury. Celem badań jest identyfikacja działań adaptacyjnych w przestrzeniach miejskich, planowanych i wdrażanych od 2017 roku, oraz konfrontacja planów ze stopniem ich realizacji w wybranych zakresach przestrzennych. Badania zostały ograniczone do 44 miast polskich posiadających Miejskie Plany Adaptacji.

The subject of the paper is climate change adaptation activities undertaken in Polish cities in the context of sustainable management of water resources, green areas, communication infrastructure, sustainable urban development and urban acupuncture. The aim of the research is to identify adaptation activities in urban spaces, planned and implemented since 2017, and to confront the plans with the degree of their implementation in selected spatial scopes. The research was limited to 44 Polish cities with Urban Adaptation Plans.
