Radon activity concentration (RAC) in the outdoor atmosphere was monitored in four localities of Slovakia. The distance between the localities were up to 130 km. The localities had a diverse orography, ranging from flatland to hilly terrain. A significant infl uence of orography and 226Ra and 222Rn content in soil on diurnal time series of RAC was found. A simple approach of determining radon exhalation rate from soil based on the increase of RAC from daily minima to maxima and removal characteristic of radon is presented. A linear dependency between radon exhalation rate from the soil and RAC in the soil gas at a depth of 0.8 m was found for sandy soils.

The aims of this study were the analysis of the risk arising from the activity of 222Rn in the buildings of the Opole University. The 222Rn activity measurements were made using a portable spectrometer Alphaguard in five buildings of Opole University. The study was conducted at different levels/floors of the buildings (building on the Kominka street, the Main Building lobby, the Department of Physics (Wing of Main Building) the Collegium Biotechnologicum and Collegium Chemicum), and in classrooms in Collegium Biotechnologicum. The obtained results showed no potential health risk from radon contamination. However it was observed that humans staying on the lower floors are more vulnerable to radiation associated with 222Rn decays, due to the physical properties of this element.

This paper presents results of application of a sequential radiochemical procedure for multi-elemental analyses for samples collected in the Arctic environment. The levels of activity of 238Pu, 239+240Pu, 241Am, 90Sr and the content of natural radioisotopes (238U, 234U and 232Th, 230Th) were investigated in soils and peats in the proglacial zone of the Werenskiold glacier and on the strandflat in the vicinity of the glacier. Results on activity concentration shows general low level of radioactive contamination. Procedure was checked using reference materials. Reasonable recoveries were obtained for almost all analyzed radionuclides except for uranium. Further work is needed to improve this stage.

Content available remote (137)Cs activity distribution in the Lithuanian coastal waters of the Baltic Sea
EN
The main (137)Cs accumulation zone in the study area was found to be located at depths below the 50-metre isobath, i.e. below the layer of hydrodynamic activity. In coastal waters not influenced by the fresh water discharge from the Curonian Lagoon, (137)Cs occurs mostly in soluble form. The particulate 137Cs activity concentration in the marine area affected by Curonian Lagoon water can make up 10% of the total (137)Cs activity concentration. The circulation model was developed to assess the distribution of artificial radionuclides in Lithuanian territorial waters. The model was validated on the basis of data acquired during the measurement campaign in the Lithuanian part of the Baltic Sea and the Curonian Lagoon in the years 1999-2001. The model enables the (137)Cs activity concentration to be simulated as a passive admixture (error within c. 15%).

The impact of 137Cs and 90Sr activity concentrations from 0.4 to 400 kBqźL-1 and from 1 to 200 kBqźL-1, respectively, on seed germination of Lepidium sativum was insignificant; however, all concentrations of 137Cs and 30 kBqźL-1 concentration of 90Sr slightly stimulated root growth. The accumulated 137Cs and 90Sr stimulated shoot and parenchyma cell growth; 137Cs suppressed RNA-polymerase II activity, and 90Sr, on the contrary, stimulated it. Different genotoxic effects on Tradescantia clone 02 stamen hair cells were observed with comparable 137Cs and 90Sr activity concentrations. Activity concentrations of 137Cs from 0.001 to 1.3 kBqźL-1 were more effective in Tradescantia clone 02 stamen hair cell reproduction, whereas the studied activity concentrations of 90Sr (from 0.002 to 640 kBqźL-1) induced more mutations. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
