Polyphenols and saponins – properties and application in cosmetics

The cosmetics market is an extremely dynamic, developing branch of the industry. There is a constant need for multifunctional ingredients that will meet the growing expectations of consumers. Active ingredients of natural origin are also appreciated more and more often. One of the most commonly used plant extracts are those rich in polyphenols. These ingredients are known for their antioxidant properties, but they can have many more functions in relation to human skin. They act against wrinkles, brighten skin, support protection against harmful UV rays, etc. Other interesting active plant ingredients are saponins – compounds with an amphiphilic structure – that can be natural alternative to surfactants or emulsifiers. They possess antimicrobial activity and strengthen blood vessels. This article briefly characterizes polyphenols and saponins, taking into account their structure and classification, as well as indicates and describes their properties that can be used in the cosmetics industry.

The papers presents the study on the application of acetals as active ingredients in paint strippers. The formulation was prepared and the ability to wrinkling of the shell was rated. The ability to wrinkling of the shell was rated by examining the force required to detachment the coating.

W artykule przedstawiono badania dotyczące zastosowania acetali jako substancji aktywnych w preparatach do usuwania powłok lakierniczych. Sporządzono preparaty oraz oceniono ich zdolność do odspajania powłoki. Zdolność do odspajania powłoki oceniano badając siłę potrzebną do oderwania powłoki.

W ostatnim dziesięcioleciu obserwujemy rozkwit badań w zakresie szeroko rozumianej chemii kosmetycznej, co związane jest z większą świadomością oraz potrzebą ludzi do posiadania zdrowego oraz młodego wygładu skóry. Aby produkt kosmetyczny mógł wejść na rynek konsumencki, oraz aby spełniał przewidywane działanie, musi zostać poddany wielu badaniom in vivo oraz in vitro. Do tych ostatnich zaliczamy omawianą w artykule technikę – oznaczanie kinetyki uwalniania substancji aktywnej z emulsji kosmetycznych.

Over the last decade much progress has been observed in the studies in the area of cosmetic chemistry, which is related to the growing awareness of people and increasing interest in maintaining young and healthy appearance. Introduction of a cosmetic product on the market requires a number of its proper analyses both in vivo and in vitro. One of the processes characterising cosmetic products is determination of the kinetics of release of the active ingredient from cosmetic emulsions.
