This paper investigates vertical bearing capacity of bridge abutments supported on sheet piling. The experience of designers from Biuro Projektów Komunikacyjnych Sp. z.o.o. provided basis for discussion. Different approaches to evaluation of vertical bearing capacity are presented; calcutation methods according to Polish Building Code and Eurocode 7. They are compared with solution developed by Arcelor Mittal which is based on cone penetration test (CPT) results. Examined abutment was weighted down with a load of 15,0 m long span made of filler beam. Live load were produced by rolling stock traveling over the deck of the bridge. Different soil conditions were taken into consideration - cohesive and non-cohesive. The purpose of this paper is to develop discussion questions that promote applying sheet piling to bridge engineering.
