The results of technological investigations into the Praski Water Treatment Plant were presented. The decision was made to include ozonation or indirect oxidation, as well as filtration on GAC bed, into the existing treatment train. The fundamental criterion for the systems understudy was that the disinfecting chlorine dioxide dose must not exceed 0.4 g/m[3]. For the purpose of engineering design, the treatment train was extended by the inclusion of indirect ozonation and GAC filtration with a contact time of 34 minutes. The investigations showed that, considering the requirement of limiting the ozone dose, the prerequisite to achieve the treatment effects desired is to extend the time of water-GAC contact to at least 30 minutes. The GAC to be used should display a high sorbing capacity, and the GAC bed should provide favourable conditions for the occurrence of biological processes.
