The aim of this study was to evaluate quality of waters the Wisłok river due to contamination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in 2013-2017. The article presents PAHs and ways to assess water quality in the light of current legal standards. The catchment area of the Wisłok river were presented with the analyzed control points. The contamination and classification of surface waters were determined based on the analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons content in Wisłok river waters. The general state of verified surface water bodies is bad and the chemical state is below good, beacuse the permissible environmental standards of PAHs in the analyzed points of the Wisłok River were exceeded. The results indicate the risk of failure to fulfil environmental goals for analyzed surface water bodies.

Research conducted in 2007–2008 on eight sites designated along the Wisłok River showed great diatoms diversity – indicated a total of 401 diatom taxa. Achnathidium pyrenaicum, A. minutissimum var. minutissimum, Navicula gregaria, N. lanceolata, Amphora pediculus, Cyclotella meneghiniana, Gomphonema olivaceum var. olivaceum, Nitzschia dissipata ssp. dissipata were most frequent. Based on diatomaceous indices IPS, GDI and TDI has been shown that the upper part of Wisłok had a high and good ecological status. However, the middle and lower section of river was characterized by moderate and poor ecological status, on the base of the IPS and GDI indices (III and IV class). TDI value indicated bad water quality (V class) in the middle and lower section.

River valleys in large cities are not only precious environmental elements in their area, but they can also be an aim of a higher pressure on acquiring new areas for the settlement. In turn, the intensive settlement nearby a river can worsen the visual attractiveness of the river's vicinity and lead to such disadvantageous environmental effects as intersection of plants' and animals' migration channels, worsening of town's aeration and occasionally even an increased flood wave in a river bed narrowed by man. On the other hand, the main role of rivers and their banks in towns is often a recreational one. That is why it seems that not only local authorities and planners, but also the rest of the citizens, should influence the spatial management of river valleys. This assumption was a base for an introductory research on Rzeszów citizens' opinion on the Wisłok valley, which was conducted in March this year. 132 people living, working or studying in Rzeszów were surveyed. Over 40% knew the Wisłok valley well, because they go to the river bank several times a month. More than 80% of the questioned people especially liked the parks, alleys and natural green areas. In turn, they had a negative opinion on the increase in built-in areas at riverbanks. The results show that in Rzeszów citizens' opinion recreational, sporting and environmental functions of the Wisłok neighborhood are most acceptable. All this leads to a question if the Rzeszów society should take a greater part in the spatial planning process regarding the immediate vicinity of the Wisłok. It seems that the river flowing through the city needs some promotion so that its real value could be perceived.

There is a well documented groundwater aquifer to the North of the town Rzeszów. This aquifer is called the lower groundwater reservoir. In contrast very few is known about some aquifers located to the South of Rzeszow, except that in general they are of a small capacity, which is a general expectation for the most part of the Carpathian region. These aquifers are mainly of quaternary origin. The available bank of data refers to seventeen's, to the former hydrogeological atlases of Poland. These somewhat historical information were briefly summarised and the capacity of the upper reservoir evaluated first from hydrogeological atlases and then from the lowest flow rates in specific cross - sections of the Wisłok river.

Several methods of water loss prediction were characterised and compared in respect to the information able to be received. Water loses for the town Rzeszów were listed on a month base and for all regions and towns in the Wisłok river basin on a year base. These loses have been compared with the data known from other parts of the country and it was concluded that except of the region Strzyżów all other water supply systems lose less water than the average amount in Poland. Three more towns in the basin of a significant water loses are Iwonicz Zdrój (30%), Łańcut (24%) and Krosno (20%).
