The work of many Warsaw architects, active in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, is still little known. Thus, there is insufficient knowledge about the Warsaw buildings from that period, which to a large extent have not survived due to the destruction of World War II and the doctrinal assumptions of the post-war reconstruction. Its reconstruction, along with scientific reflection, is not only due to the need - even if only virtually - to save the lost architectural heritage, but also due to the conservation works carried out on the existing objects. The article presents the professional profile of Edward Goldberg, an architect working in the indicated period mainly in Warsaw. His work has not been the subject of comprehensive studies so far. The analyses carried out in the article allowed for the presentation of many typical solutions characteristic of Warsaw architecture at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, especially residential - from luxurious tenement houses to workers' housing and public buildings. The text focuses not only on stylistic solutions, but also on functional and sometimes technical aspects.

Od początku lat 20. XX wieku rozpoczęto zagospodarowywanie południowego obrzeża Pola Mokotowskiego, lokując tam instytucje naukowe - zalążek planowanej dzielnicy uniwersyteckiej. Jako pierwszy powstał w 1920 projekt budowy Państwowego Instytutu Geologicznego. Marian Lalewicz projektując siedzibę PIG odszedł od jednolitej stylistycznie konwencji architektonicznej utrzymanej w duchu neoklasycyzmu początku XX wieku, z czasów swej działalności w Petersburgu, na rzecz synkretycznego zestawiania motywów historycznych, odnoszących się do różnych okresów świetności architektury polskiej o klasycznych korzeniach: renesansu, baroku i klasycyzmu. Kompozycja przestrzenna tego ogromnego, trójczłonowego gmachu wywiedziona została z założeń rezydencjonalnych entre cour et jardin. Jednak powojenne niekorzystne zmiany urbanistyczne: rezygnacja z placu przed wejściem po stronie północnej i wprowadzenie w to miejsce w latach 60. XX wieku, przesłaniającej frontową elewację, blokowej zabudowy mieszkaniowej, skutkuje zniekształceniem i brakiem zrozumienia dla pierwotnej koncepcji przestrzennej i niemożnością prawidłowego odbioru tego wybitnego dzieła warszawskiej architektury międzywojnia.

The Southern border of Pole Mokotowskie was developed from the beginning of nineteen-twenties by locating scientific institutions there - the beginnings of the planned university district. The design of the National Geological Institute (PIG) was prepared as the first one in 1920. Marian Lalewicz, designing the head office of the PIG, departed from the stylistically uniform architectural convention in the spirit of neoclassicism of the beginnings of 20th century, from the time of his operations in St. Petersburg, for a syncretic composition of historical motives referring to various periods of the magnificence of Polish architecture of classical roots: renaissance, baroque, and classicism. The spatial composition of this huge, three-part building was derived from residential assumptions of the entre cour et jardin. However, the unfavourable post-war urban changes: resignation from the square in front of the entrance from the North and replacing it in the 1960s with residential development in the form of blocks of flats, obscuring the facade, which results in deformation and lack of understanding for the original spatial concept, and the impossibility of correct reception of this outstanding masterpiece of the Warsaw architecture of the interwar period.
