Bauhaus and the beginning of mass housing: how residential open building reacts to changes in society

In current realizations and research papers, we increasingly encounter designs of flexible dwelling houses. Topics such as Residential Open Building, Infill Architecture, or Support / Infill are also interesting due to changing demands of a population and a long period from planning permission to the end of a building process. The hitherto neglected aspect is the origin of thinking about an apartment building as a flexible structure. The question is whether we can already find this topic in the work of the leading Bauhaus representatives. Using the direct research method, the study of historical sources and available literature, we realized that this topic can be found in the work of the Bauhaus architects. Especially because this progressive school saw an architect‘s position in a broader context. Its visionary representatives predicted the rapid development of society and they responded to this by developing a new typology of apartment buildings that allowed a change. The theme of residential open building can be found in the early 20th century especially in the European context. The work of the Bauhaus representatives was ahead of their time and began to consider the apartment building as a variable structure.

Na obrzeżach dzielnicy willowej Weimaru, wśród biedermeierowskich i secesyjnych domów wznosi się biały klocek, szokujący nawet współczesnego przechodnia swoją kubiczną, prostą formą. Niby kosmiczny statek, który wylądował wśród zieleni ogrodów otaczających mieszczańskie wille. Wnętrza, równie daleko odbiegały od przestrzeni ogniska domowego kształtowanego na początku XX w. Dziewięćdziesiąt lat, które mija od powstania „Musterhaus Am Horn” według projektu Georga Muche i Waltera Gropiusa, to czas na podsumowanie i postawienie pytania na ile dom współczesny, czy dom jutra czerpie z tradycji modernizmu? Czy hasła głoszone w latach 20. XX wieku odnoszące się do kształtowania przestrzeni życiowej nowoczesnego społeczeństwa są dalej aktualne? A być może leżą u podstaw projektów domu jutra?

At the outskirts of a villa district of Weimar, among Biedermeier and modernism houses, stands a white block which astonishes even a contemporary passerby with its cubic, simple form. It looks like a space ship which landed among green gardens surrounding bourgeois villas. The interior is also far from the household space developed in the early 20th c. Ninety years which have passed from building Musterhaus Am Horn designed by Georg Muche and Walter Gropius, so it is high time we recapitulated and considered to what extent the contemporary house, or the house of tomorrow, draws from the tradition of modernism. Are the mottos of the 1920s regarding the development of living space of the then modern society still valid? Do they form a basis of the house design of the future?
