The font named by Karol Bułhak in volume III of Polonia Typographica (published in 1959) as number 1 was used only in three publications. All of tchem has been digitized and are available freely in the Internet. This allowed to confront the inventory of the font presented in Polonia Typographica with the actual texts. The surprisingly large number of discrepancies has been discovered. For some characters it is not obvious how to represent them in Unicode.

A short overview of the standard, together with the relevant tools and resources, is presented from the historical Polish language perspective. The notions of code space, code point, character, combining sequence, graphemic cluster, variation selectors etc. are presented or at least mentioned. A relatively new notion of textel is briefly discussed. The 15 th and 16th century treatises are used to illustrate some open problems. Various relevant Internet resources are mentioned, including those created by the author.

The Unicode standard is designed as a framework for the worldwide interchange and processing of documents written in various languages and from various technical disciplines. The Unicode standard, however, does not define glyph images and neglects typography. Nevertheless, it has been adapted as the de facto standard in topography. The advantages of such a universal standard are obvious, but its objectives result in serious drawbacks in typographical applications. Therefore our conclusion is that it will be advisable to explore alternative solutions.
