The Sztoła River is a left-bank tributary of the Biała Przemsza River, into which it flows on the outskirts of the Jaworzno city. Mining of the Quaternary backfilling sands in the Szczakowa sand pit, which is located near the estuary of the Szoła River, began in the mid-1950s. At the beginning of the 1960s, the excavations of the underground Olkusz mine of zinc and lead ores, which was built to the east of the upper part of the Sztoła River, began to be drained. The excavations occurred in Triassic carbonate rocks. The gravity drainage system of the Szczakowa sand pit was moving east, up the river, and at the same time the difference between the drainage affected and the natural groundwater level in the Sztoła Riverbasin increased. At the end of the1960s the level and length of the main drainage excavations in the Olkusz mine were already stabilized. The changing range of the Szczakowa sand pit drainage and the quasi-fixed drainage range of the Olkusz mine had an impact on the supply conditions of the Sztoła River, which was recharged by underground water from the Olkusz-Pomorzany mine. The paper presents the results of the analysis of the drainage impact of both mines on changes in the flow rate of the Sztoła River in the years 1959-2021 and an estimated forecast of the river condition after shutting down the drainage of the Olkusz area mines in December 2021.

W artykule przedstawiono wyniki badań przeprowadzonych na rzece Sztole zlokalizowanej w południowej Polsce, w rejonie olkuskim. Pobliska kopalnia Olkusz-Pomorzany eksploatująca złoża cynku i ołowiu ma znaczący wpływ na chemizm tych wód. Próbki wód do badań pobrano w górnym i środkowym biegu rzeki. W górnym biegu wody charakteryzują się typem hydrogeochemicznym HCO3–Ca–Mg, natomiast w dolnym są to wody typu HCO3–SO4–Ca–Mg. Na podstawie uzyskanych wyników analiz fizykochemicznych dokonano uproszczonej oceny stanu ekologicznego i stanu chemicznego wód rzeki Sztoły zgodnie z wytycznymi podanymi w rozporządzeniu Ministra Środowiska z 21 lipca 2016 r. w sprawie sposobu klasyfikacji stanu jednolitych części wód powierzchniowych oraz środowiskowych norm jakości dla substancji priorytetowych (Dz.U. 2016, poz. 1187). Wyniki badań wskazują, że ogólny stan wód w rzece jest zły, a stan chemiczny na całym badanym odcinku Sztoły jest poniżej dobrego, co jest spowodowane zrzutem poprzez Kanał Baba wód kopalnianych pochodzących z odwodnienia olkuskich kopalń rud Zn-Pb, które zawierają znaczące ilości jonów siarczanowych, cynku oraz ołowiu.

In this paper, the results of inspections on the Sztoła river were presented. Based on this research, the quantative status of surface water was shown. River chemistry and hydrogeological conditions are dependent on the Zn-Pb "Olkusz–Pomorzany" mine and the "DB Schenker" sand mine. Water samples for the analysis from the upper and middle course of the Sztoła river were taken. The conducted analysis have led to changing the hydrochemical water type from HCO3–Ca–Mg in the upper course to HCO3–SO4–Ca–Mg in the middle course. An assessment of the chemical status was carried on the basis of individual physicochemical elements of surface water and one series of survey, in accordance with Polish legislation (Dz.U. 2016, poz. 1187 and Dz.U. 2016, poz. 681). The results indicate that the status of the surface water of the Sztoła river is bad. The chemical status are below good. Based on that research has shown that the general state of surface water is bad and the chemical state is below good. This situation is caused by water from the "Olkusz-Pomorzany" mine which contain sulphate, zinc and lead ions. Water from Baba Canal to the Sztoła river is provided from the Zn-Pb mine.
