Traditional DSP systems are software oriented and controlled by laptop/desktop PCs. A microsystem approach is much more attractive because of its size, weight, power consumption and speed. For instance, a biometric application under study requires continuous fingerprint authentication at the frequency of at least 10 Hz, the size smaller than 5x4x2 cm3 and the power consumption lower than 1 Watt. The paper describes a design, in which existing DSP recognition algorithms have been simplified, converted into VHDL, and implemented as a SoC device. The algorithms have been developed by FPR Corporation and proved to be superior when compared with other existing commercial solutions.
