Pozostałością górnictwa, rozwijającego się w Zabrzu od 1790 r., oprócz licznych zabytków techniki, są m.in. bezodpływowe niecki osiadań. Utworzone w nich zbiorniki wodne tworzą nowe siedliska przyrodnicze o bioróżnorodności przewyższającej bioróżnorodność siedlisk pierwotnych. Przykład takiego siedliska, opisany w artykule, stanowią Stawy Mikulczyckie w Zabrzu, tworzące dogodne miejsce rozrodu ptaków wodno-błotnych, a po przeprowadzonej rewitalizacji także miejsce o walorach edukacyjnych i rekreacyjnych.

The development of mining in the area of Zabrze since 1790 has contributed to the transformation of the local farming settlements into a modern industrial town. The mining industry has left many pieces of engineering heritage around Zabrze, making the town attractive for industrial tourism, as well as new landforms, including closed-drainage subsidence troughs. One example of such landforms are Mikulczyce Ponds in Zabrze, where flourishing reed beds have provided favourable conditions for the reproduction of wetland birds. After their revitalisation, the ponds have also become a place used for educational and recreational purposes. Thus, the site allegedly degraded by mining has turned into one of the town's most interesting landscapes, and its rich flora and fauna confirms the thesis that at least some anthropogenic post-mining habitats have higher biodiversity than the “original” farmland habitats. Given the civilizational, culture-making (heritage) and environmental role of mining presented in the article, it is difficult to sustain the common belief that the effects of mining on the residents and environment of mining and post-mining areas are always negative.
