The paper presents the usage of mathematical theory of evidence in maritime and offshore applications. This paper brings together a collection of some research on the Dempster–Shafer theory of belief functions. By bridging fuzzy logic and probabilistic reasoning, the theory of belief functions has become a primary tool for knowledge representation and uncertainty reasoning in expert systems. This paper can serve as the authoritative reference in the field of evidential reasoning and an important archival reference in a wide range of areas including uncertainty reasoning in artificial intelligence and decision making in maritime and offshore applications, in management, engineering and transport, in marine shipping, coastal management, navigation, surveillance, monitoring and observation. In particular the paper describes uncertainty reasoning approaches to decision making in maritime and offshore applications, possible applications in safety-based assessment, Coastal Management Expert System, mathematical theory of evidence in marine navigation, the optimisation problem of monitoring stations distribution and finally the facility location and location science.

Nowadays, many of changes have arisen in maritime traffic due to the enlargement of ship’s size and improvement of ship’s speed. It is common that the risks of handling a ship in narrow water area is increasing according to increase traffic volume. In order to correspond to these changes and risks, it should be necessary to make sure the relation between proper width of route in fairway and allowable traffic volume. The conventional method of designing a fairway takes into consideration of movement by one ship of maxi-mum size. But the congestion by traffic volume is not taken in the concept. In a while, a case of road design is generally considered about a traffic volume. From such a view point, this research proposes the method of de-termining fairway-width in consideration of traffic flow. To evaluate traffic congestion in a route, the Envi-ronmental Stress model is adopted as the index of standard, using traffic simulation with avoiding a collision for reproducing traffic flow.

EN
Paper describes Integrated Vessel Traffic Control System realizing fusion of data received from the shore based station of the Automatic Identification System (AIS) and pulse and Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radars and presenting information on Electronic Navigational Chart. Additionally on the Observation Post is installed Multi Camera System consisting of daylight and thermal cameras show-ing automatically object tracked by radar and selected manually by operator.

Due to the increasing of the piracy attacks all over the world, the maritime transport is now facing increased risk and security problems. To prevent and minimize the impact of the piracy, the owners and the maritime administrations must take preventive actions/measures. One of these actions is the implementation at a global level of the Long Range Identification and Tracking system (LRIT). The system, mandatory under SOLAS Chapter V, Regulation 19-1, is now operational since one year and proved to be a useful security tool against piracy.

The paper has presented the usage of mathematical theory of evidence in evaluating of the pos-sibility of object detection by monitoring radar stations. The level of object detection allows for effortless conversion to optimisation problem of monitored area coverage. Development of such task enables such dis-tribution of observatory stations that maintains the detection rate higher than the assumed value. An appropri-ate rate level is achieved by covering the analysed set of points with sufficient number of radar stations. Combining evidence allows for calculating corresponding parameters for each set of observing equipment.
