Recent research trends in the field of textile and clothing design, refer to the so-called smart materials that are embedded into the textile structure to obtain special functions unreachable with traditional techniques. Particular attention in this regard has been paid to shape memory alloys. The specific properties of alloys like pseudoelasticity or two-way shape memory effect can be transferred directly on the properties of the final product. Thanks to that materials capable of damping vibrations, dissipating mechanical energy or actively adjusting its characteristics to changes in ambient conditions can be developed. The article presents a detailed analysis of the state of knowledge on the use of shape memory alloys in textiles and clothing. Moreover it indicates directions for future works concentrated on functionalization of such matrerials that are intended to be used in innovative clothing.
