Research studies have discussed the correct selection and choice of the optimal units for a specific type of search and rescue task. This article has described the characteristics and properties of merchant vessels that determine their potential for SAR (Search and Rescue) operation. An attempt was made to estimate the suitability of a craft according to its effectiveness and risk. This research may have an impact on improving the organization and coordination of search and rescue operations at sea. The authors have proposed criteria for evaluating merchant units during selection for planned SAR actions. A model for evaluating the suitability of a unit has been presented. It is a mathematical model with elements of expert knowledge. The model classifies attributes, taking into account the lower and upper risk limits and introducing a risk sensitivity factor. The article contains tables and graphs.

Both SAR’79 and UNCLOS’82 Conventions are specific tools that establish the juridical and technical foundations for the development of reactive aspects related to maritime safety response. These con-ventions set up the search and rescue regions in which coastal states should assume the responsibility to dedi-cate resources, to cover the needs of the SAR responsibilities. 2006 amendments to IAMSAR manual volume I, in force since 2007, June the 1st, established the identification and assessment of risks related to maritime safety as one of the practical principles in maritime risk management. The Strait of Gibraltar is a narrow nav-igational channel connecting the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea between Spain and Morocco. The Strait supports a huge volume of maritime traffic increasing steadily every year. This paper presents the pre-liminary results obtained in relation with the taxonomy and temporal distribution of maritime emergencies re-ported and documented by the Spanish Maritime Administration throughout 2000-2004 period.

In the paper, there is presented a problem of search object drift during SAR operation. Presented method of conducting search takes into account probability of containment (POC) of searched object inside search area. Its also consider available endurance of SAR unit. Described method allows for achieving as good as possible average POC.
