Przedmiotem artykułu są przekształcenia terenów poprzemysłowych analizowane w kontekście działań podejmowanych w dwóch zbliżonych do siebie regionach: Metropolii Ruhry (Niemcy) i Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowskiej Metropolii GZM (Polska). Artykuł prezentuje wycinek badań ograniczony do wybranych przykładów rewitalizacji terenów poprzemysłowych w obydwu regionach, a w szczególności do przekształceń kompleksu kopalni węgla kamiennego i koksowni Zollverein w Essen. W oparciu o analizę dokumentów i literatury przedmiotu oraz studium przypadków opracowanie ma na celu wykazanie podobieństwa omawianych regionów, identyfikację i wskazanie zasadniczych kierunków przekształceń terenów poprzemysłowych, a także działań koniecznych do podjęcia w procesie ich rewitalizacji.

The subject of the article is the transformation of post-industrial areas, analyzed in the context of activities undertaken in two closely related regions: the Ruhr Metropolis in Germany and the Metropolis of Upper Silesia - Zagłębie GZM (Metropolis GZM) in Poland. The article presents a fragment of the research limited to selected examples of post-industrial regeneration in both regions, and in particular to the transformation of the coal mine complex and the Zollverein coking plant in Essen. Based on the analysis of documents and literature on the subject as well as a case study, the aim of the paper is to show the similarity of the discussed regions, to identify and indicate: basic directions of transformation of post-industrial areas, as well as actions necessary to take in the process of their revitalization.

Hałdy stanowią integralną część krajobrazu kulturowego regionów poprzemysłowych rozwiniętych w oparciu o przemysł ciężki. Ich rola w krajobrazie ulegała jednak ewolucji. Jako formy sztuczne początkowo postrzegane były negatywnie, dopiero po czasie zaczęto doceniać ich walory. Celem artykułu było zbadanie roli jaką współcześnie pełnią hałdy w Metropolii Ruhry (Niemcy). Badania wykazały, że są one nie tylko ostoją zieleni w silnie zurbanizowanym regionie, oraz miejscem codziennej rekreacji jego mieszkańców, ale także dziedzictwem wartym ochrony w formie parków krajobrazowych i tematycznych, czy atrakcją turystyczną o zasięgu ponadregionalnym.

Spoil tips are an integral part of the cultural landscape of post-industrial regions developed on the basis of heavy industry. Their role in the landscape, however, evolved. As artificial forms, they were initially perceived negatively, only after a while they began to appreciate their values. The aim of the paper was to examine the role that spoil tips play currently in the Ruhr Metropolis (Germany). Studies have shown that they are not only a mainstay of greenery in a strongly urbanized region, and a place of everyday recreation of its residents, but also a heritage worthy of protection in the form of landscape and thematic parks, or a tourist attraction of supra-regional scope.
