If standards did not exist, we would notice that right away. Nowadays, it is obvious for us that a product we buy complies with our expectations. We are often not even aware of the great role standards have in upgrading our level of live, safety and what economical benefits they give. These factors were the impulse to the creation and rapid development of private food standards. The following paper presents a study and an analysis which allowed to evaluate the Level of certification in food trade in Poland, and also to measure the popularity of private food standards IPS and BRC. At the moment the most popular are still public systems - ISO 9001 and HACCP. Just a bit less popular are the private standards IPS and BRC, which gain more interest than ISO 14001 or OHSAS 18001 / PN-N 18001 systems. Polish companies are determined to implement IPS and BRC private standards, if they intend to cooperate with global trade companies (sometimes it is a formal condition) or want to obtain an objective evaluation. IPS and BRC implementation may also mean that a company complies with security requirements even if the risk is higher. The standards are still young; were printed and developed in the last 10 years and are somewhat similar when it comes to the spectrum of requirements, however, they are not always mutually accepted. Companies, therefore, often choose more than one standard. Out of 176 IPS and BRC certificates issued in Poland, 40 state companies decided to claim for certification to both of the private standards at the same time, despite the fact that Polish Trade and Distribution Organization declared that both standards are mutually accepted. One universal system or standard could not only have a beneficial effect upon the clarity of requirements for food and beverages in food chain, but also reduce the costs of standards maintenance.
