The publication covers the complex process of analyzing the accuracy of mapping models produced in AM (Additive Manufacturing) processes with a thermoplastic material – FFF (Fused Filament Fabrication) and polymerization of light-curing resin – PolyJet. The research was conducted with the use of an advanced optical measuring system – the GOM Atos 3D scanner. The part selected for the research in question was the water pump body as a representative example of an element with adequate dimensional and shape conditions (high degree of folding and geometric differentiation) allowing, based on the results of coordinate measurements determined in the research process, to define the potential area of application of AM models made of thermoplastic material and resin hardened with UV light. The performed tests showed the accuracy of individual AM methods at a level within the range declared by machine manufacturers. However, the PolyJet body is characterized by a much higher accuracy of the shape mapping compared to the FFF body. The dimensional accuracy is also higher for the resin model in relation to the thermoplastic model, which results primarily from the thickness of the elementary layer of the model material applied by the printing module defined for individual incremental processes – 16 μm for RGD 720 and 0.2 mm for ABS. Detailed elaboration and analysis of the research results are presented in this publication.

Duża konkurencja wśród firm zajmujących się produkcją maszyn, urządzeń lub ich podzespołów sprawia, że niezwykle ważne stają się czynniki, takie jak: czas pojawienia się produktu na rynku, jego cena i jakość. Techniki szybkiego prototypowania, nieodzownie związane z ideą Przemysłu 4.0, nabierają więc ogromnego znaczenia. W pracy przedstawiono korzyści wynikające z zastosowania technologii PolyJet, oferowanej przez światowego lidera rynku druku 3D, firmę Stratasys, do wytwarzania detali metodą formowania wtryskowego do produkcji małoseryjnej.

High competition among companies involved in the production of machines, devices or their components leads to the fact that such factors as the time of appearance of the product on the market, its price and quality are extremely important in the commercial market. Rapid prototyping techniques, being integrally associated with the idea of Industry 4.0, are of great importance in such a case. The work focuses on presenting the benefits coming from the use of PolyJet technology, offered by a world leader in the 3D printing market, Stratasys, for manufacturing of polymer parts using small scale injection molding.

Purpose: The paper presents an approach to rapid manufacture of new product by PolyJet technology. Design/methodology/approach: Resolution, accuracy, speed and materials are basic factors of rapid prototyping, which mutually exclude themselves on most devices. PolyJet procedure is a technology, which successfully simultaneously solves some of these problems. Findings: The manufacture of product by PolyJet technology has proved to be a good approach. All advantages offered by that technology have been applied and all requirements of the new product have been satisfied. By testing on the first prototype the adequacy of the product shape has been established and the prototype has been suitably adapted. As the data on the product shape are in the computerized form, the changes on the product are made simply. Research limitations/implications: Regrettably, the models from rapid prototyping do not allow major loadings and exposure to exacting conditions, since the materials used are in the development stage and are gradually gaining strength and toughness. Our product is not exposed to major mechanical loadings; therefore the process as such is adequate. Practical implications: By this technology very sophisticated and complicated products can be made. It assures the manufacture of nested structures and mechanisms already assembled. The price is influenced only by the product size. The shape complexity is not important at all. Originality/value: : In case of a small quantity of products, not exposed to major mechanical loadings, the models made by PolyJet process are usable also as final products.
