The State Zoological Museum, established in 1928, inherited and developed the legacy of the Zoological Cabinet of the University of Warsaw (existing since 1818). The Cabinet’s collection had been gathered for decades and belonged to eminent personages not only in Poland but also in Europe. The Museum and its collections were threatened many times: first by a great fire in 1935, then by the German attack on Warsaw in 1939 and subsequent occupation, as well as by the outbreak of the Warsaw Uprising and the destruction of the city. After the post-war reconstruction of the Museum, it was time to function in a new political reality, in which the most significant change for this institution was the establishment of the Polish Academy of Sciences. A planned inclusion of the State Zoological Museum in the structures of the newly-founded Polish Academy of Sciences meant that the scientists had to face a dilemma: in exchange for research funds and career development opportunities, they were expected to show favour to the communists and readiness to implement the idea of socialism. In the background of this process, numerous scientific conferences took place, where controversial visions of the future of biological sciences clashed. This process resulted in the transformation of the State Zoological Museum into the Institute of Zoology of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Przedstawiono tematy najważniejszych konferencji, sympozjów, seminariów oraz warsztatów naukowych zorganizowanych przez Komisję oraz podano listę wykładowców wraz z tematami wykładów wygłoszonych przede wszystkim w ostatniej dekadzie.

Paper presents outline of history of scientific activity of the Committee for Architecture and Town Planning of the Wroclaw Branch of Polish Academy of Sciences since the time of its forming in 1974 until the end of 2015. There are presented the compositions of Committee’s authorities in particular terms and there are described the main ranges of research works carried out in the spoken periods. There are also given themes of the most important scientific conferences, symposiums, seminars and workshops organized by the Committee together with list of lectures given by lecturers particularly in the last decade.

The Committee on the Electrification of Poland was set up by the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAS) in 1956. Professor Lucjan Nehrebecki was appointed as General Secretary of the Committee and Professor Zygfryd Jung was Head of the Centre of Studies. Six scientific commissions were formed to prepare reports on the questions of electric energy demand and the development of new power plants and transmission lines. More than 300 papers concerning different aspects of the electrification programme were published in the five-year period of the Committee's activity up to 1961. In that time, fifteen Ph.D. theses were sponsored by the Committee and its scientific commissions. The PAS Committee on the Electrification of Poland accomplished its mission in 1961, but it has been continued since then by the new Committee on Energy Issues set up by the PAS Praesidium in 1962 and again in 1974.

Komitet Elektroniki i Telekomunikacji Polskiej Akademii Nauk – KEIT PAN działa w krajowym środowisku naukowo-technicznym od roku 1960. Artykuł przedstawia strukturę, zadania statutowe i działania Komitetu na rzecz integracji i rozwoju elektroniki i telekomunikacji w kraju. Komitet Elektroniki i Telekomunikacji cały czas jest aktywnym uczestnikiem życia naukowego w kraju. Jednak to uczestnictwo jest inne niż kiedyś i cały czas się zmienia. Autorzy przedstawiają krytycznie stan obecny prac Komitetu, ale i podejmują próbę zdefiniowania na nowo roli, działania i potencjału KEiT PAN, w całkowicie odmiennych warunkach uprawiania nauki w kraju i na świecie, niż jakiś czas temu gdy Komitety były definiowane. Wnioski, jeśli zostaną zaakceptowane przez krajowe środowisko naukowe elektroniki i telekomunikacji, mogą posłużyć do zmiany, czy optymalizacji pracy Komitetu EiT w przyszłości.

Committee of Electronics and Telecommunications of Polish Academy of Sciences (KEiT PAN) has been acting on behalf of scientific community in Poland since 1960. The article presents structure, statutory tasks, and Committee activities on behalf of the integration and development of electronics and telecommunications sciences and technology in Poland. The Committee of Electronics and Telecommunications of PAS is all the time an active participant of research life in the country. However, this participation is different than it used to be, and all the time is subject to intense changes. The authors present critically the current status of the Committee, but also undertake an effort to newly define the role, activity and potential of KEiT PAN, in completely new conditions of doing research in Poland and worldwide, than it was at that time, when the PAS Committees were originally defined. The conclusions, upon possible acceptance by the national and Committee research Communities of electronics and telecommunications, may possibly serve to change and/or optimise the work of the Committee in the near future.

Przedstawiono stanowisko Prezydium Polskiej Akademii Nauk dotyczące gazu ziemnego znajdującego się w warstwach łupkowych (tzw. gazu łupkowego), uchwalone w dniu 11.03.2014 r. Stanowisko zostało przygotowane na podstawie raportów cząstkowych odpowiednich Komitetów Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Przedstawia ono ocenę obecnego stanu poszukiwań złóż takiego gazu, dotychczasowego stanu rozpoznania jego zasobów, a także wybranych aspektów środowiskowych i ekonomicznych związanych z potencjalnym zagospodarowaniem złóż gazu ziemnego z formacji łupkowych w Polsce. Stanowisko prezentuje także opinię Polskiej Akademii Nauk na temat koniecznych badań naukowych i badawczo-rozwojowych, ich organizacji wspomagających poszukiwanie i rozpoznawanie złóż takiego gazu oraz potencjalne przyszłe zagospodarowanie takich złóż.

The statement presented from the Presidium of the Polish Academy of Sciences, related to natural gas in shale strata (so-called shale gas), was adopted on the 11th of March, 2014. The statement was prepared on the basis of partial reports from the appropriate Committees of the Polish Academy of Sciences. It presents a concise assessment of the current state of the exploration of shale gas, the state of recognition of its resources, as well as selected environmental and economic aspects related to the potential development of shale gas resources in Poland. The statement also presents the opinion of the Polish Academy of Sciences on the scope of necessary scientific and R&D works and their organization, which should aid in the prospecting and exploration of deposits of shale gas, as well as their potential future development.

W pracy przedstawiony został opis i analiza zlinearyzowanych równań stanowiących podstawę doboru sterowania dla układu mechanicznego platformy stabilizującej zaprojektowanej w Instytucie Centrum Badań Kosmicznych PAN. W pierwszym etapie zaprezentowany został model matematyczny układu oraz wyniki numerycznych analiz funkcji opisujących dynamikę układu. W następnym etapie przeprowadzona została linearyzacja, która pozwala na dobranie optymalnego algorytmu sterowania, a także stabilizację mechanizmu.

In this article authors presented description and analyze linearized equations which are very important during stabilizing platform control selection procedure. The platform was design in Space Research Centre of Polish Academy of Science. In the first stage, authors showed mathematical system model and numerical functions analysis describing the dynamics of the system. Linearization was the next stage. It allowed selecting the optimal control algorithm and system mechanism stabilization.

Polska Akademia Nauk w ciągu kilkudziesięciu lat wypracowała różne sposoby komunikowania naukowego, począwszy od komunikacji nieformalnej – konferencji, zjazdów, spotkań o charakterze naukowym – przez książki i czasopisma, po publikacje udostępniane w bibliotekach cyfrowych oraz w modelu Open Access. Celem artykułu jest analiza analogowej komunikacji naukowej i funkcjonowania PAN w kulturze konwergencji oraz wykazanie, że instytucja ta wykorzystuje najnowsze formy udostępniania wyników badań, w tym narzędzia Web 2.0. W artykule przedstawiono dane liczbowe dotyczące drukowanych publikacji naukowych PAN. Na podstawie danych rejestrowanych przez bazę Arianta, przeglądu stron internetowych instytutów, komitetów i oddziałów oraz wywiadu przeprowadzonego w Biurze Upowszechniania i Promocji Nauki PAN opisano rozwój cyfrowego modelu komunikacji naukowej w PAN.

The Polish Academy of Sciences develop different ways of science communication through many years, range from informal communication – conferences, conventions, scientific meeting – to books, journals and papers available in digital libraries and by Open Access. The aim of the paper is an analysis of the analogue communication and working the Polish Academy of Sciences in the media convergence. The analysis should prove that the institution use the recent method of sharing of the researches results, including Web 2.0. The paper shows number of printed publications of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The digital science communication is described on the grounds of data registered in Arianta, analysis of websites of the institutes, the committees and the divisions, and the interview in the Office of Science Popularization and Promotion.

W lutym 2005 roku prof. Albrecht Wagner, dyrektor generalny Niemieckiego Synchrotronu Elektronowego (DESY) w Hamburgu, odwiedził Warszawę na zaproszenie prof. Andrzeja Legockiego, prezesa Polskiej Akademii Nauk. Celem tej wizyty było podpisanie umowy przedłużającej dotychczasową współpracę naukową między DESY a PAN do 31 grudnia 2009 r. Podpisanie umowy nastąpiło 2 lutego 2005 r. w pomieszczeniach Akademii w Pałacu Kultury i Nauki (fot.). Z okazji tej wizyty przeprowadziłem z prof. Wagnerem rozmowę na temat współpracy naukowej między polskimi instytucjami naukowymi a DESY. Zacząłem od pytań ogólnych, przechodząc następnie do spraw bardziej szczegółowych. Wywiad (przeprowadzony w jęz. angielskim) został autoryzowany w kwietniu 2005 r. Z przyczyn ode mnie niezależnych jego tekst (przełożony przeze mnie na polski) dopiero teraz ukazuje się w Postępach Fizyki.

The article discusses the life and work of Alojzy Melich, professor (doctor habilitatus) of economic sciences the Higher School of Economics (sińce 1974 the Karol Adamiecki Economic Academy) in Katowice. Alojzy Melich was the first to receive a doctoral degree at that tertiary school and has been connected with it until now. In the years 1964-1988 he was Head of the Institute of Political Economy, and in the years 1965-1975 he was President o f the Higher School of Economics (Karol Adamiecki Economic Academy) in Katowice. In 1971 he was nominated a corresponding (associate) memberof the Polish Academy of Sciences, and in the same year he was granted an honorary doctorate by the Martin Luther University in Halle-Wittenberg. Profesor Alojzy Melich’s concern with economics as a branch science focuses on issues of wages and distribution. He has devised an original system of collective wages, which has been put into practice in many branches of industry in Poland. Professor Melich has written over 300 works, including 28 books on economics and about 120 studies, with the rest consisting of papers and articles.

A plenary meeting of the Committee of Architecture and Town Planning at the Polish Academy of Sciences, ending the Committee's 1999-2003 term in office took place on 28 and 29 May 2003 in the Architects House of the Society of Architects of the Republic of Poland in Kazimierz DoIny. The chairman of the Committee presented a short report on Committee activity, recalling some of the plenary meetings and associated scientific sessions as well as the work of certain sections. The Committee selected the "housing question" as the theme of the scientific session held during its last meeting. This topic became the leading motif of the session. A summary of the discussion can be enclosed in the following theses: - it is necessary to stimulate intellects and render the problem more universal: this is a task for the mass media and the school system, both general and architectural training; - from 1989 no effective programme of solving the housing problem has been presented, as confirmed by the gulf between construction productivity and the existing needs; - work on programmes and projects for the development of assorted types and standards of residential housing must be initiated immediately; this is a task for the government and the local authorities; - it is necessary to promptly amass suitable financial means, obtained from the budget and thanks to social fund raising in cooperation with such organisations as Caritas and the Polish Humanitarian Campaign; - it is mandatory to create legal restrictions directed against construction wastage apparent in the excessive embellishments of public institution buildings (town halls, insurance societies, banks, the interiors of chairman's offices, etc.), trade institutions and so-called residences, and against the scattering of buildings which occupy farmland or terrains of high natural qualities. The last meeting of the Committee of Architecture and Town Planning at the Polish Academy of Science ended with the chairman thanking members of the Committee and its commissions for their great contribution to the improvement of architectural order in Poland.

In the article the author presents the personal archives of Polish scientists in the following disciplines: astronomy, physics, mathematics and chemistry. The aim is to provide information that would go beyond general data on the particular batches of archival materials. It contains information on various levels of archival grouping, covering not only fonds but also units of archival materials, groups of documents or single documents. For astronomy, the materials that have received most attention in the paper are those relating to Władysław Dziewulski (1878-1968), Professorat the Stefan Batory University in Wilno (Vilnius) and the Nicholaus Copernicus University in Toruń, the initiator and head of the astronomic observatories at those two universities. In the field of physics, material relating to the following scientists has been analyzed: Klemens Eugeniusz Dziewulski (1842- 1889), laboratory worker at the chair of experimental physics of the Polish-language University in Warsaw (Szkoła Główna) and then the Russian-language Imperial Warsaw University; Stanisław Kalinowski (1873-1946), Professor of the Warsaw Polytechnic (known under the English name of Warsaw Technical University), and Wolna Wszechnica Polska (an open university), the founder and head of the Geophysical Observatory at Świder and of the Physical Institute of the Museum of Industry and Agriculture, who was also a deputy and senator of the Polish parliament; Ludwik Wertenstein (1882-1945), Professor of Radiology at the Wolna Wszechnica Polska; Mieczysław Woflke (1883- 1947), Dozent at the Zurich University and Professor at the Warsaw Polytechnic. For mathematics, the archives relating to the following scientists have been presented: Kazimierz Kuratowski (1896-1980), Professor at the University of Wrasaw and at the Lwow Polytechnic; Wacław Sierpiński (1882-1969), Professor at the University of Warsaw and the University of Lwow; Hugo S teinhaus ( 1887-1972) Professor at the University of Lwow and the University of Wrocław. As for chemistry, the materials that have been presented relate to Tadeusz Urbański (1901-1985), Professor at the Warsaw Polytechnic, at the Military Academy of Technology, and at the Institute of Organic Chemistry of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The archival materials presented in the article contain a wealth of information illustrating various aspects of the scientists' activity in the areas of science in which they were engaged, thus making a valuable contribution to Poland's cultural heritage.
