In 2023, nine Polish universities were included on the prestigious Shanghai List, but only in the fifth, ninth and tenth hundred position. Compared to last year, two universities from the ninth and tenth hundred dropped, which, however, does not change their overall low level. The author tries to explain the reasons for such low positions of Polish universities in this ranking in relation to the leaders and other European universities, comparing publication achievements in the TOP2% 2022 ranking. However, the distance to European universities from the top hundred of the ranking seems to be too large.

W 2023 r. na prestiżowej Liście Szanghajskiej znalazło się dziewięć polskich uczelni, ale dopiero na pozycjach w piątej, dziewiątej i 10. setce. W porównaniu z ubiegłym rokiem ubyły dwie uczelnie z dziewiątej i 10. setki, co jednak nie zmienia ich ogólnie słabej oceny. Autor stara się wyjaśnić przyczyny tak niskich pozycji polskich uczelni w tym rankingu w stosunku do liderów i innych uczelni europejskich, porównując osiągnięcia publikacyjne w rankingu TOP2% 2022. Dystans do uczelni europejskich z pierwszej setki rankingu wydaje się być jednak zbyt duży.

The author analyzes the relations between scientific societies and universities in Poland in the interwar period. The source material is the Yearbook “Polish Science. Its Needs, Organization, and Development” published by the Józef Mianowski Fund in the years 1918-1947. An investigation of the relationships between scientific societies and universities offers excellent opportunities for interpreting the scientific activity in the Second Polish Republic. The connections between scientific societies and universities involved the centers for propelling scientific thought, where university chairs or scientific society committees played the leading role. Sometimes the works of non-university experts were important. The analysis of the material collected in the “Polish Science” also points to many other professional organizations (associations of professors, associate professors, or assistants). Many universities had societies supporting them. Gaining social support for universities was extremely important at the time.

Purpose: An analysis of education programmes at selected universities in Poland in terms of coverage of subjects related to sustainable development. Methodology: An analysis of information published on the Internet, on the official website of each examined Polish university. Results: The scope of education on the subject matter related to sustainable development at the nine best Polish universities was presented. The number and names of faculties and majors were indicated (where the main purpose was education on that subject matter and where that subject was taught, but it was not their basic teaching subject). The number of courses and ECTS points allocated to those courses was determined, for each major. Originality: The research results fill in the gaps in available statistics on teaching of courses related to sustainable development at Polish universities. The data can be the basis for comparisons between other periods and drawing of conclusions about the trends of changes in education.

Repozytoria instytucjonalne należą do nowych źródeł upowszechniania dorobku naukowego uczelni wyższych w otwartym dostępie. Otwarty dostęp (ang. Open Access) to jedyna droga eliminowania udostępniania prac doktorskich wyłącznie na miejscu w bibliotece i zapewnienia w ten sposób większego ich wykorzystania przez społeczeństwo. Zdeponowane w repozytoriach prace doktorskie wyszukiwane są na różny sposób w samym serwisie i innych projektach w sieci. Otwarty dostęp jako formę udostępniania zasobów naukowych m.in. przez repozytoria instytucjonalne rekomenduje i wspiera w krajach Unii Europejskiej Komisja Europejska. Celem artykułu jest próba przybliżenia rozwoju udostępniania prac doktorskich w repozytoriach instytucjonalnych polskich uczelni, ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem repozytoriów instytucjonalnych najlepszych uczelni wyższych w Polsce. Ze względu na rozległość problematyki, rozważania ograniczono do wybranych informacji związanych z udostępnianiem prac doktorskich.

Institutional repositories belong to new sources of dissemination of academic achievements of universities in open access. Open Access is the only way to eliminate sharing of PhD theses only in the library and thus it ensures greater use by the public. The PhD theses deposited in repositories are searched for in different ways in the website itself and other projects in the network. Open access as a form of sharing scientific resources among others by institutional repositories is recommended and supported by the European Commission in the countries of the European Union. The aim of the article is to attempt to draw forward the development of access to PhD theses in institutional repositories of Polish universities, with particular focus on institutional repositories of the best universities in Poland. Due to the extent of the problem, the deliberations were limited to selected information related to the access to PhD theses.
