Synthetic dyes are extensively used in various industries like textile and food industry and are responsible for generation of colored and toxic wastewater. The aim of study was to evaluate decolorization efficiency of White Rot Fungi P.ostreatus (strain BWPH) for dyes belonging to different classes: Anthanthrone Red (anthraquinone dye) and Disazo Red (azo dye) having concentration of 0.08g/l. The Daphnia magna immobilization test was performed to check zoo toxicity of samples during and after treatment. The result show that maximum decolorization efficiency achieved for Anthanthrone Red and Disazo Red dye after 168h was 94.31% and 73.13% respectively. The zoo toxicity test reflects that the pure dyes were much less toxic to D.magna at higher concentration. In contrast, the post process samples were more toxic to organism. It reflected production of toxic metabolites because of enzymatic degradation/biotransformation of dye. For anthraquinone dye, post process sample of 0.25 h was less toxic as compared to 168 h sample. Toxicity Unit was 23.52(class IV), and 2.61(class III) respectively for Anthanthrone Red and Disazo Red post process sample. The conducted research showed high potential of BWPH strain for decolorization dyes belonging to different classes. But the mycelium produces toxic substances during the decolorization process. It may be related to the biodegradation of these substances to toxic metabolites. Further studies have indicated to optimize the process of decolorization.

The role of fungi in the treatment of wastewater has been extensively researched. Many genera of fungi have been employed for the dye decolourization either in living or dead form. In this study, the removal of an acidic dye, Indigo Carmine (IC), from an aqueous solution by biosorption on dead fungus, Pleurotus ostreatus, was investigated. The effects of contact time, initial dye concentration, amount of dead biomass, agitation rate and initial pH on dye removal have been determined. Experimental results show that an increase in the amount of dead biomass positively affected the dye removal. The highest removal was obtained at 150–200 rpm. Slightly lower removing activities were found at lower agitation rates. The dye adsorption effi ciency was not affected by pH except minor variation in the pH of 2–8. Color removal was observed to occur rapidly within 60 minutes. The removal of dye by dead biomass of P. ostreatus was clearly dependent on the initial dye concentration of the solution. Dye removal was reduced from 93% to 64% as concentration was increased from 50 to 500 mg/L Indigo Carmine. This study showed that it was possible to remove textile dyes by dead biomass of P. ostreatus.

Prowadzono badania nad utylizacją makulatury gazetowej za pomocą grzybni boczniaka ostrygowatego Pleurotus ostreatus. Podczas tych badań hodowano grzybnię i uprawiano owocniki w podłożach uprawowych.

Conducted research on the utilization of waste newspaper using mycelium oyster mushroom Pleurotus ostreatus. During these surveys were cultured mycelium and fruiting bodies grown in of growing substrates. Created a growing substrates: waste newspaper or wheat straw, and mixtures thereof. Utilization of the components of those substrates was measured by the degree of utilization and performance of fruit bodies. The effectiveness of utilization depended on the amount of waste newspaper in the substrates. Maximum utilization took place in a mixture of waste newspaper and wheat straw in the ratio 3:1. In the substrate containing only waste newspaper did not form a fruiting body. Performance fruit bodies to grow to reduce the concentration of waste newspaper in the substrates. The fruiting bodies grown in substrates containing waste newspaper were present heavy metals. Their concentration was higher than acceptable by the standards. They were inedible. Substrates after cultivation were enriched in protein oyster. They can be applied as organic fertilizer in agriculture.

Contribution of an extracellular and an intracellular laccase in biosuspension of oyster mushroom formed during submerged cultivation was studied. Contribution of both forms of laccase in biosuspension was changing in characteristic manner. Ratio of their activities during cultivation was at first decreasing to a certain level and later was increasing. This was connected with phases of growth.

Decolorization of water solutions of dyes by laccase from subsoil after cultivation of Pleurotus ostreatus was studied. Three dyes were applied: Acid Blue 62, Acid Red 27 and Reactive blue 81. It was observed that decolorization occurred as a result of physical sorption of dye on the subsoil surface and catalytic activity of laccase. The process intensity depended on the duration, kind of dye and flow intensity rate.

Peanut hulls (Arachis hypogaea) are waste byproduct in confectionary and oil extraction industry. Disposal of hulls into soil or burning creates considerable technical and economical problem. Thus, the new uses for waste peanut hulls are explored. Possibility of cultivation of fruit bodies of Pleurotus ostreatus on peanut hulls was investigated in this research. Three problems fell within the scope of the work. The first one was the adaption of the mycelium to growth on peanut hulls. The next one was culturing of the mycelium in a submerged culture for inoculation on solid substrate. The last one was the cultivation of mushroom on solid substrate for production of the fruit bodies. It was found that peanut hulls can be used as a suitable substrate for growth of Pleurotus ostreatus mycelium. Weight of the obtained wet fruit bodies was from 0,148 to 0,200 of the wet weight of solid substrate. This result is close to the one obtained by mushroom producers in traditional cultivation.
