Since a several years Poland became one of the European leader in investment in photovoltaic (PV). Last 3 years 2,5-3,5 GW of new capacity were added yearly. In the first quarter of 2022 total PV capacity passed 10 GW, what gives Poland the 20th position in the world an 7th in the EU. The forecasts, based on developers plans for ‘2030 assumed 27-30 GW. New circumstances, after Russian aggression to Ukraine, gas blackmail and energy crisis, on the top of ongoing clime crises need a new, accelerated strategy. It is reflected in new EU solar strategy. Also for energy security and energy independence Poland re quire more renewable energy from indigenous reserves. However even 27 GW of PV in 2030 is now in risk. Poland is phasing slow down period in the PV investment in the coming years 2023-2025 (when shortage and extremely high prices of energy are expected), due to the limited access of new projects to the power grid. Already in 2021 more than 26 GW of new projects haven’t get the grid connection permits. Despite different sources of financing there is no clear plan for improvement of renewable energy sources connection to the grid. So probably, urgent energy transition might be blocked by grid underdevelopment in so called PV hosting capacity. The article identifies some strange (e.g. no will for fast improvements in the case of energy storage) and some structural barriers to overcome problems with grid connections to make energy transition real successful.
