1.5-litre PET bottles were filled with a sample of groundwater, weighted and then stored in laboratory. Approximately every 11 weeks the bottles were weighted and one of them was taken for analyses. About 2.3% of water was lost from the bottles per year. The summer evaporation accounted for 55% of the winter evaporation value, which is mainly due to the difference in air humidity. The temperature effect was negligibly low. The electrical conductivity (PEW) increased linearly by 3 units (μS/cm) per loss of 1% of water. However, contrary to the electrical conductivity, the concentrations of tritium did not show any sensitivity to the degree of evaporation of the water sample, which justifies the conclusion that this type of bottles is suitable for storage of natural water samples intended for the analysis of tritium for up to 3 years under laboratory conditions.

In this globalized era, building materials play an essential role in the civil engineering field. Nowadays, with the increase in population, the demand for construction activities is also increasing. Polyethylene (PET) bottles are among the most widely used materials and cause an abundance of non-degradable waste, at about 0.94 million tonnes in Malaysia. One of the alternatives to reduce this waste's environmental impact is to incorporate it inside building materials such as brick and concrete. As PET bottles' recycling is highly promoted, the physical and mechanical properties of building materials made from PET bottles have also been reviewed. The data analysis shows that the compressive strength, flexural strength, split tensile strength and density of building materials decreases as the percentage of PET waste increases. However, other properties such as water absorption, initial absorption rate, and firing shrinkage increase proportionally with the PET waste. Besides, heavy metals in these building materials comply with the United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) standards. It can be concluded that the percentage of PET waste incorporated into brick and concrete must be less than 5% and 2%, respectively, to produce suitable materials to provide alternatives in reducing and recycling PET waste.

Waste PET can be reused as partial or complete substitute of an aggregate in a concrete composition or as a concrete reinforcement. However, the main drawback of such applications is the hydrolysis of ester linkages of poly(ethylene terephthalate) in highly alkaline environment of the cement matrix. To prevent alkaline hydrolysis, the PET fibres were coated with commercially available ethylene/vinyl acetate copolymer (EVA). Effectiveness of the use of copolymer EVA as a protection layer against strong alkali solutions has been demonstrated and discussed. Chemical changes in PET fibres after alkaline treatment have been referred to mechanical properties of the fibres. Mechanical properties, like compressive and flexural strength of the composites as well as the long-term durability performance of recycled PET fibres in alkaline environment were also investigated. The preliminary results indicated that the introduction of the PET fibres does not deteriorate the mechanical strength of the concrete composite.

There are fifteen waste pet bottles and a commercial grade ABS was collected from local supplier of Chidambaram town. The ABS was used to study the mechanical properties of PET blend composites. This study was performed by FT-IR spectroscopy. From the characteristics infra-red stretching bands the mechanical properties of samples were discussed.

Post-consumer PET (polyethylene terephthalate) containers in the Republic of Croatia are being baled and delivered to recycling plant, where they go through various phases of cleaning and separation of PET from other materials. Waste from the recycling process consists of different materials - PET, labels and sleeves (poly(vinyl chloride), paper and polystyrene) as well as caps (polypropylene and polyethylene). The intention was to make use of this waste, so mouldings were made by compression moulding and their mechanical properties were tested.
