Tożsamość przestrzenna miasta to poczucie przynależności społeczności lokalnej (uświadomione lub podświadome) do miejsca, w którym żyje i przywiązanie do własnej odrębności kulturowej oraz zbiorowa identyfikacja (świadomość) znaków (symboli materialnych, zwyczajów, zachowań) przeszłości i teraźniejszości. Określenie tożsamości miasta jest poszukiwaniem jej fizycznych znaków - wartościowych elementów przestrzeni, które wniósł rozwój kultury. Znaki te muszą być zidentyfikowane i przeanalizowane według najważniejszych kryteriów: specyfiki, unikatowości, odrębności i niepowtarzalności, które pozwalają odróżnić jedno miasto od drugiego. Powinniśmy poszukiwać tych znaków poprzez analizę struktury przestrzennej miasta: organizacyjno-prawnej, społecznej, funkcjonalnej, a zwłaszcza fizjonomicznej.

The space identity of the town is feeling of membership of local community (conscious or subconscious) to the place of their life and attachment to own cultural autonomy and colective identification (consciousness) of sings (material symbols, customs, behaviours) of the past and the present. The qualification of a town identity is a quest of its physical signs - valuable elements of space which are brought by development of culture. These signs must be identified and analysed according to the most important criteria of: specificity, iniqueness, autonomy and unreapeatibility which let us distinquish one town from the other. We should look for these signs analysing space structures of the town: organizational -legal, functional, social and particulary physiognomical. Ostrów Lubelski is a small wooden town situated about 50 km north-east of Lublin. It has a monumental drawing of a plan but the walls of the square are destroyed by the great buildings from the socialist period. The greatest worths of the town are teams of wooden buildings coming from the begining of the 20 century which create oiginal achitectural climate. The wooden houses aren't valuable indyvidually but because they form big teams in a great number and they are situated the gables face the roads. The characteristic features of the houses are ornamental shutters and sculpture decoration abowe windows. The indy-vidual charcteristic of the town are also small chapels on the roads which come from even the end of the 19 century. The town is falling into decline and is becoming a big village. The town sees its chance in developing of tourism. The task of space policy of the town is the protection of valuable teams of wooden buildings: by creating zones of plane protection, areas of "relocation" of wooden buildings, applying to protection economic instruments, developing of the programme of protection of wooden monuments and the programme of its promotion. The protection of space identity rests on a town council and is based on constant making local community aware of characteristic and unique features of environment of their living. They should confirm consciousness of local community by propper education of the community, town planning marketing and promotion of culture values of a town. A town council should apply to protection of space identity of a town all available instruments of space policy: space planning, legal instruments (making certain kinds of areas and structures legally protected and making motions for issuing legal acts), economic instruments, instruments of property management, investments, monitoring. In my opinion, we should raise legislators awerenes of aspects of local ndentity, in order to protect it. by the support of local and state laws.
