The aim of the presented research was to determine the relationship between concentrations of six heavy metals in the shells of nine selected species of mollusks and their concentrations in water and bottom deposits. Based on a data analysis, the usefulness of shells as an indicator organism element was determined. The authors also indicate which species of mollusks are the best reflection of the examined relationship.

Carapace length and width as well as condition were analysed in 2336 Chinese mitten crabs, Eriocheir sinensis, caught in 1999-2007 in the Odra River estuary (Poland). Their condition was assessed using the Fulton coefficient and the carapace width-individual weight relationship. September through November catches netted the highest number of crabs (83.60% of the total sample); males accounted for 53.56% of the crabs caught at that time. Males showed a significantly higher mean individual weight, significantly higher carapace width and length, and a higher Fulton coefficient than the females. The lowest mean individual weight, carapace width and length, and the highest condition coefficients were recorded in those crabs caught in 1999-2000. Later on, the mean carapace width and individual weight increased, and the increase was accompanied by a reduction in condition of the crabs. Causes of the differences are being sought in environmental changes taking place in the Odra estuary.

Content available remote PCBs in phytoplankton in the Odra Estuary [commun.]
EN
Eleven PCB congeners were determined in phytoplankton samples collected from the Odra Estuary at 9 stations in 2001-2002. The PCB concentrations were related to the temperature, turbidity, salinity, oxygen and redox potential of the water as well as to the pigment content in the samples. The results indicate that phytoplankton and the detritus derived from it play a crucial role in the distribution of PCBs, their transfer from the water column to sediments and from the Estuary to the sea. The species composition of the phytoplankton occurring in this area could also be very important as regards the sorption of PCBs.

Knowledge of the hydrodynamic conditions and the exchange of water in estuaries is important for ecological, navigational and water management reasons. The morpho-logy, river flow, sea level and local winds constitute important factors that influence the water currents and rate and extent of the mixing of salt and fresh water. The influence of the morphology changes on flow conditions, on the penetration of salt into the estuary and on the water exchange in the estuaries in this paper are analysed on the example of the Odra Estuary. The morphology of the Odra Estuary, and specially the Świna Strait, has changed immensely since the beginning of the XVIII century. The analyses were performed on the basis of data from in situ measure-ments and results of calculations. For the calculation the three-dimensional model ESTURO was used, because of the complexity of the hydrodynamic regimes and their three-dimensional character. The calculations were performed for the three different hydro-meteorological conditions for each of the five analysed morphological situations of the Odra Estuary. Some results of calculations have been presented.

Various types of utilization, conflicting interests and environmental problems call for coastal water management as part of an integrated coastal zone management. This is especially necessary for the Oder (Odra) estuary at the German/Polish border. The river Oder causes severe, ongoing and large scale eutrophication, which limits the ecological and economic value of its adjacent coastal ecosystems. Simulation models are an important tool with which to tackle these practical problems and support management. We present a general concept of a decision support system with an integration of sub-models. Two types of models for long-term water quality forecasts and scenario simulations, as well as short-term prediction of water pollution are available at present. Spatial human-pathogenic virus transport and decay simulations are used as an example to demonstrate their practical use.

In this paper a statistical analysis of wind conditions occurring in the Odra estuary has been presented. The measurements of wind directions and velocities from years 1970-1995 for four meteorological stations of IMGW: Świnoujście, Dziwnów, Trzebież and Szczecin-Dąbie have been analysed.
