It has been over 5 years since the Ontario government has signed an agreement for the construction of third tunnel under the city of Niagara Falls. The tunnel of the length exceeding 10 km will be bored using one of the world’s largest TBMs. It will be one of the biggest such tunnels in North America. Primarily the project was due to be completed this year but Due to slower than projected boring progress caused by constant tunnel roof over-break, which eff ected in route transferring, the project completion date has been extended to at least 2013. Once completed, the hydrotunnel will supply 500m3 of water per sec. for the hydroelectric power station aimed at obtaining power from renewable energy sources.
