Wprowadzanie nowych struktur przestrzennych w zabytkowe zespoły urbanistyczne oraz umiejętna integracja współczesnej architektury z historycznym kontekstem jest przedmiotem zainteresowań wielu badaczy i teoretyków, oraz projektantów działających na polu architektury i urbanistyki. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono zespół MuseumsQuartier w Wiedniu, który z perspektywy niemal dziesięciu lat funkcjonowania można uznać za jedną z najbardziej udanych realizacji tego typu w Europie w ostatnim ćwierćwieczu. Dzieje zespołu, w którym można wyróżnić cztery główne, historyczne stadia rozwoju, sięgają roku 1719. Cały kompleks MuseumsQuartier, realizowany wieloetapowo w latach 1998-2002, składa się z kilkunastu instytucji kulturalnych. Współczesną interwencję architektoniczną stanowią trzy nowe, minimalistyczne w wyrazie budynki wkomponowane w istniejący, zrewaloryzowany i zaadaptowany do nowych funkcji, historyczny zespół. Usytuowanie wielofunkcyjnego zespołu budynków o funkcjach związanych z kulturą na zakończeniu najbardziej reprezentacyjnej przestrzeni publicznej miasta pozwoliło na włączenie wytworzonych przezeń wnętrz urbanistycznych w system znaczących dla statusu i tożsamości Wiednia elementów struktury przestrzennej. Realizacja ta jest zarazem udanym przykładem konserwacji podupadłych obiektów zabytkowych, a wraz z nimi rewitalizacji centralnego fragmentu miasta, która przyczyniła się do wzbogacenia go o nowe atrakcje turystyczne i ciekawe miejskie przestrzenie publiczne.

Introducing new spatial structures into historical urban complexes and a full integration of modern architecture with historical context, is the subject of interest among many researchers, theoreticians and designers working in the field of architecture and urban planning. This article presents the MuseumsQuartier complex in Vienna which, from the perspective of almost ten years of functioning, could be regarded as one of the most successful realisations of that type in Europe during the last quarter of the century. The history of the complex, in which the four main stages of development can be distinguished, dates back to 1719. The whole MuseumsQuartier Complex, realised in many stages within the years 1998-2002, consists of several cultural institutions. The modern architectonic intervention are the three new buildings, minimalist in their appearance, integrated into the existing historical complex, restored and adapted to serve new functions. Location of a multi-functional building complex serving functions connected with culture at the end of the most elegant public space in the city allowed for integrating the urban interiors created there into the system of elements of a spatial structure significant for the status and identity of Vienna. This realisation is also an excellent example of conservation of dilapidated historical objects combined with revitalisation of the central fragment of the city, which contributed to enriching it with new tourist attractions and interesting urban public spaces.
