In the present study, intraspecific morphometric distribution of Spicara flexuosum was investigated along the five locations on the Turkish coast based on eight morphological characters. A total of 116 samples were obtained along the Turkish coasts (Istanbul, Yalova [Armutlu], Izmir, Mersin and Antalya) by using trawlers and the handline fishing method within the period in 2014–2015. Principal component analysis and the dendrogram-based Euclidean distance method were used to evaluate different morphometric traits among five locations. The most important ratios of the morphometric loading characters were the head length to interorbital distance, head length to eye diameter, maximum body height two to head height, and head height to head length. The classification matrix based on the discriminant function analysis showed that 94.7% of original grouped were correctly classified. Principal component and cluster analysis showed the existence of two morphologically differentiated groups of S. flexuosum. First one composed of Istanbul and Yalova and the second one consisted of Izmir, Mersin and Antalya. This study is the first description of the intraspecific distribution of morphometric characters for S. flexuosum along the Turkish coast as well as the Mediterranean region for fisheries management purposes.

Reasoned fertilization is an essential element of the agroecological approach, which aims first and foremost to improve soil and plant growth. The objective was to examine how slow-release nitrogen fertilizer will perform on the wheat productivity compared to conventional quick-release nitrogen fertilizers. A slow-release nitrogen cover fertilizer Duramon (24% N) was applied to soft wheat and compared to conventional nitrogen fertilizers as well as the local farmer practices. A randomized complete blocks design was adopted with four replications and four sites and repeated during three cropping seasons. Stand density, plant canopy height, tillers/plant, spikes/plant, biological yield, grain yield and harvest index were evaluated. Compared with conventional quick-release nitrogen fertilizers, the slow-release nitrogen significantly (P≤0.05) improved tillering, spikes/plant, canopy height, biological yield, grain yield and harvest index. It achieved an average total biomass and grain yields of 3220 kg DM/ha and 978 kg/ha, respectively. The average gains for total biomass and grain yields were 14% and 21%, respectively. However, when compared with the local farmers’ practices, the gains obtained were significantly higher, with 123% and 175% for the slow-release N fertilizer and 95% and 128% for the conventional quick-release N fertilizer, respectively. The harvest index was improved by N application, rising from 25% in local controls up to 30% for slow-release N fertilizers. In conclusion, compared with conventional quick-release nitrogen fertilizers and local practices, the use of slow-release fertilizers with less units of nitrogen applied significantly improved spikes number, biological and grain yields and harvest index, even in dry years.

This study focuses on the taxonomy of epiphytic diatoms in the area of invasive macroalgae from the genus Caulerpa. Caulerpa species are characterized by the presence of secondary metabolites, such as caulerpenyne (CYN), the main function of which is a chemical defense mechanism against herbivores and epiphytes. Epiphytic diatoms were studied on fronds of Caulerpa taxifolia (“killer seaweed”) and, for comparison, on autochthonous macroalgae Padina sp. and Halimeda tuna at the eastern Adriatic Sea coast (Island of Hvar) in the summer and autumn of 2010. The qualitative analysis was performed with the use of light and scanning electron microscopy. The Shannon–Wiener Diversity Index determined for Caulerpa taxifolia showed a wide range of values (3.11–4.88), with a maximum in August and a minimum in October. While the number of taxa on Caulerpa taxifolia fronds increased from June (41) to August (88), it declined in autumn due to the high relative abundance of Cocconeis caulerpacola, which is a diatom typical for Caulerpa. On the other hand, the largest number of taxa on Padina sp. was observed in September (82). The detailed composition of epiphytic diatoms and seasonal dynamics in the area affected by the invasive macroalga Caulerpa taxifolia have been determined for the first time.

Unusual occurrence of planktonic diatom species, Chaetoceros bacteriastroides and Chaetoceros pseudosymmetricus, was noticed in three different marine ecosystems of Adriatic Sea: the Krka Estuary and Telaščica Bay in the Central Adriatic, and in southern Adriatic offshore. From 2010 to 2015, these two Chaetoceros species were recorded in heterogeneous environmental conditions and in a very low abundances. Both species are regarded as very rare in world oceans, and consequently knowledge of their distribution and ecology is rather poor. Primarily described from tropical waters and showing Indo-Pacific distribution, C. bacteriastroides and C. pseudosymmetricus findings in Adriatic represent the northernmost records in world's oceans and seas. For C. pseudosymmetricus this is also the first occurrence in European seas. Areal expansion and introduction of new phytoplankton species in the Adriatic Sea might be related to different circulation regimes in the Ionian Sea and the concurrent rise in sea temperature in the Mediterranean in the last decade. Recent investigations have shown that entering currents, of either Atlantic/Western Mediterranean or Eastern Mediterranean origin, modify the composition of the plankton community in the Adriatic by bringing different newcomers.

In order to assess the response of the radial growth of Pinus pinea L. to climatic variability in Central Italy, dendrochronological and dendroclimatological analyses were carried out on five different populations scattered along the Tyrrhenian coasts of the peninsula. The aim of this study is to contribute to the understanding of the ecological demands of this species, particularly in the study area. For each site total ring, early-, and late-wood width chronologies were developed. Multidimensional analyses were performed for the three tree-ring datasets in order to analyze the rela-tions between sites chronologies. Both Principal Component Analyses and hierarchical classifications highlighted an important difference of one site in respect to the other, probably due to site characteris-tics. Correlation functions were performed to infer the main climatic factors controlling the radial growth of the species. For a comparative study, we limited our attention to the common interval 1926-2003 (78 years) in which the response of the tree-ring chronologies to climate at both local and regional scale was investigated. Positive moisture balance in the late spring-summer period of the year of growth is the climatic driver of P. pinea radial growth in the study area. Moreover, this study shows how low summer tempera-tures strongly favor the radial growth of the species.

The paper investigates the changes in the characteristics of Atlantic Water (AW) flowing eastwards along the Egyptian coast in the south-eastern Mediterranean during the period 1959-2008. Vertically, only one water mass could be observed in winter in the upper 200 m layer, whereas in summer, there were three distinct water masses. The subsurface water mass, of Atlantic origin, occupying the 50-150 m layer and characterized by low salinities from < 38.60 to 38.80 PSU, moves throughout the study area from west to east and spreads over a range of density between 27.5 and 28.5 σt. Temperature and salinity have indicated increasing trends for both temperature and salinity during the last 25 years (1983-2008), reaching 0.85°C decade-1 and 0.073 PSU dec-1, respectively, for the Mediterranean surface waters. For the Atlantic water, the trends were 0.28°C dec-1 for temperature and 0.014 PSU dec-1 for salinity.

In a remnant wetland of Central Italy, we assessed the effect of water level changes induced by fishery farming activities (February-July) on the abundance of two duck species (mallard, Anas platyrhynchos and teal, A. crecca) during a two-years period: a "treatment" year (2004) when fishery farm activity was high and water level dropped, and a "control" year (2007) when it was inactive and water level increased. Abundance values of mallards and teals were significantly different in the two years, and showed a direct correlation with water level in both the species in 2004 but not in 2007. In both species, abundance was significantly lower in 2004, only in late spring (June-July), revealing their sensitivity to water stress. A higher water level in wetland in control year 2007 may favour teals and mallards in the study area, allowing respectively the permanent occurrence of the former (a locally wintering species) and a higher abundance of the latter (locally breeding and resident species). A higher water level in wetland channels with the flooding of the surrounding reed- and rush beds, may induce a larger area of suitable habitat, available for these duck species. These facts emphasized that water level changes due to human activities are key to year-to-year variation in duck abundance in Mediterranean wetland region.

Using objectively analysed hydrographic data, currents have been calculated off the Egyptian Mediterranean coast at the surface and at 30, 50, 75, 100, 200 and 300 m depths for the four seasons. The surface circulation is dominated by an anticyclonic circulation off Salum Bay in winter, spring and summer. In nearshore areas, the current flows eastwards at the shallower levels but westwards at the deeper levels. Off the Nile Delta, the current is almost eastward with a higher velocity in summer and autumn, while in spring it is very weak. Off the area between Port Said and Rafah, there is a clear cyclonic circulation appearing in all seasons except winter. At 50 and 75 m depth, the velocity of the circulation is weak. At 100 m depth, the circulation that appeared between Matruh and Alamen in summer decreases in area and magnitude at the former depths. At 200 and 300 m in winter, the current velocity is quite low. In spring the current flows southwards off the area between Rafah and Port Said. In summer, the current off the area between Port Said and Rafah is quite strong and flows to the south. The situation in autumn is quite similar to that in summer, except in the eastern area, where the current is a westward one.

The Karpatian-Badenian (Burdigalian-Langhian, Early-Middle Miocene) transition is a key interval in the evolution of the Paratethys and the proto-Mediterranean Sea. We present here, based on the Wagna section (Styrian Basin, Central Paratethys), a study of a quantitative analysis of the microfossils (foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils) and a statistical treatment of data to reconstruct the palaeoenvironmental condition during this time. During the Karpatian, relatively deep water, cool conditions with a relatively high nutrient input prevailed in the Styrian Basin, as suggested by the high abundance of cool-water foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils. The Badenian was generally warmer, with a lower availability of nutrients, and was characterized by carbonate units and patch reefs and associated microfossil assemblages (e.g., Eponides spp.). Riverine plumes brought fresh water into the Styrian Basins during the Badenian and induced high productivity and the proliferation of species highly tolerant of low salinity such as Ammonia tepida. The passage from calcareous nannofossil Zone NN4 to NN5 is characterized by a reorganization of water masses and the transition from cooler and nutrient-rich to warmer and nutrient-poorer waters. Based on the microfossil abundance trends we interpret the planktonic foraminiferal species Globigerina tarchanensis as preferring cooler nutrient-rich waters and Reticulofenestra minuta as preferring warmer and nutrient-poor waters. The application of cluster analysis based on the Bray-Curtis Similarity and non-metric MultiDimensional Scaling (nMDS) adds important information to that obtained only from microfossil abundance curves, enabling identification of cryptic trends and correlation with sequence stratigraphy. This method may even complement biostratigraphic interpretation and support age attribution in the Paratethyan area, where marker species are missing.

The digital gap prevents today in many parts of the world the diffusion of e-Science which is considered as one of the key enablers of progress and development in the 21st Century. On the other hand, investing in e-Infrastructures is the key for a long-term growth and changes in the Society in developing Countries. The paper discusses this topic and provides some details about the EUMEDGRID Project experience in the Mediterranean area.

Twelve time interval maps were constructed which depict the plate tectonic configuration, paleogeography and general lithofacies. The aim of this paper is to provide the geodynamic evolution and position of the major tectonic elements of the area within the global framework. The Hercynian orogeny was concluded with the collision of Gondwana and Laurussia, whereas the Tethys Ocean formed the embayment between the Eurasian and Gondwanian branches of Pangea. The Mesozoic rifting events resulted in the origin of the oceanic type basins like Meliata and Pieniny along the northern margin of the Tethys. Separation of Eurasia from Gondwana resulted in the formation of the Alboran-Ligurian-Pieniny Ocean as a part of the Pangean breakup tectonic system. During the Late Jurassic-Early Cretaceous time, the Outer Carpathian rift had developed. Latest Cretaceous-earliest Paleocene was the time of the closure of the Pieniny Ocean. Adria-Alcapa terranes continued their northward movement during Eocene-Early Miocene time. Their oblique collision with the North European plate led to the development of the accretionary wedge of Outer Carpathians and foreland basin. The formation of the West Carpathian thrusts was completed by the Miocene time. The thrust front was still progressing eastwards in the Eastern Carpathians.

Orogeneza hercyńska zakończyła się kolizją Gondwany i Laurusji, a Ocean Tetydy utworzył zatokę pomiędzy dwom a ramionami Tetydy - Gondwaną i Laurazją.
