Wrocławski obszar Metropolitalny jest po Warszawie drugim pod względem tempa rozwoju obszarem metropolitalnym w Polsce. W czasie ostatnich latach Wrocław awansował na trzecie pod względem wielkości PKB na mieszkańca miasto w Polsce prześcigając Kraków a ustępując jedynie Warszawie i Poznaniowi. W mieście oraz jego otoczeniu powstało ponad 100 tysięcy nowych miejsc pracy. Te znane powszechnie dane statystyczne mogą przyćmić istotny z punktu widzenia rozwoju regionu fakt; Największym beneficjentem rozwoju metropolii wcale nie okazują się mieszkańcy Wrocławia. Wg EUROSTAT największym wygranym ostatnich 10 lat pod względem tempa wzrostu PKB są obszary tak zwanego subregionu wrocławskiego czyli sąsiadujące z Wrocławiem powiaty, jeszcze do niedawna stanowiące jeden z najsłabszych pod względem ekonomicznym subregionów województwa.

Wroclaw metropolitan area has a high density of the railway network. Rail network connects with Wrocław all citys of the area. Inside the city of Wrocław the railway network is very dense but the railway passing through the city center in which are located the main elements that determine passenger traffic. Another major shortcoming of the City railway infrastructure is too small amount of stops. To fully exploit the potential of railroad in Wrocław Metropolitan Area the expansion of rail infrastructure in Wrocław is necessary. In particular, it is desirable to: a) construction of new railway stations and stops and their integration with city public transport, b) modernization of the infrastructure in order to connect the tram and rail network (to start tram-train light rail), c) construction of new underground sections of railway lines and stations in the city center and international Airport.
