Development Strategy of the Voodeship is a mandatory document programming the development of a region. One of its basic functions is to indicate actions allowing to promote and take advantage of the potential of environment and social and technical infrastructure with the aim to stimulate local development. Correct diagnosis and rational programming of actions are not possible without access to the information base identifying resources of environment and social and economic infrastructure. Mazovia Spatial Information System, with its open information catalogue, fills this niche. The role of Development Strategy is not restricted to identifying the potential of the voivodeship and accompanying social, cultural and economic conditions, but it also allows to monitor effects of its implementation. The system of spatial information incorporating modules for construction of scenarios and forecasts as well as of analysis of changes seems to be the right instrument to monitor the effects of the Development Strategy of the Voivodeship.

In the paper there are presented the basic rules of organization of the Mazovia Spatial Information System, its structure and role in the voivodship management. The Mazovia Spatial Information System has been created in order to diagnose and monitor the current state of the voivodship as well as to promote its development. The associated works aim at the strategy of the voivodship development. They recognize the preconditions and domains which are the priorities of the Voivodship Self-Government efforts. The structure of the System includes databases for matadata, georeference data and thematic data. Attention has been paid to the integration and currency of georeference data. At the end, the organizational problems accompanying the process of creation of the Mazovia Spatial Information System have been identified.
