New Heteroceratidae (Ammonoidea) from the late Barremian deepening succession of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône, France)

Investigation of the late Barremian deepening succession of the Provence platform, cropping out south of Marseille (Bouches-du-Rhône, France), has yielded a new ammonite fauna belonging to the Martelites sarasini Subzone (Martelites sarasini Zone). The fauna is dominated by representatives of the Heteroceratidae Spath, characterized by different patterns of coiling, high intraspecific variabilities and dwarfism. These heteroceratids are distinctive and utterly different from all previously known taxa, and this justifies the introduction of the new taxa Heteroceras denizoti sp. nov., Heteroceras veratiae sp. nov., Calanquites gen. nov., based on Imerites katsharavai Rouchadzé; Giovaraites gen. nov., based on Giovaraites massiliae gen. et sp. nov., Barguesiella gen. nov., based on Barguesiella goudesense gen. et sp. nov. and the closely allied Barguesiella mantei gen. et sp. nov. The occurrence of the latter species at the top of the Maiolica Formation in Italy questions its early Aptian age assumed in the literature. The newly described fauna could be considered as the first case of micromorphy in the Heteroceratidae. Its biostratigraphy, palaeoenvironmental and palaeobiogeographical significance are discussed.

Marsylia jest drugim do wielkości miastem Francji liczącym blisko milion mieszkańców. W roku 2013 pełniła funkcję gospodarza Europejskiej Stolicy Kultury. W ramach przygotowań do tego wydarzenia została przeprowadzona kompleksowa rewitalizacja Vieux Port pod kierunkiem pracowni Normana Fostera, architekta krajobrazu Michel Desvigne oraz lokalnych urbanistów i planistów. Prace prowadzone były prawie trzy lata. W wyniku tego procesu miasto zyskało nową przestrzeń publiczną dostępną dla pieszych, przeprojektowano układy komunikacyjne, a na potrzeby stolicy kultury wzniesiono budynki użyteczności publicznej, począwszy od muzeów, a kończąc na lustrzanym zadaszeniu Vieux Port Pavilion. Nową ikoną współczesnej architektury tego miasta został budynek MuCEM – Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée będący przykładem kształtowania współczesnej architektury wpisującej się bezbłędnie w kontekst otoczenia.

Marseille is the second largest city in France of nearly one million inhabitants. In 2013 Marseille was the host of the European Capital of Culture. In preparation for this event comprehensive revitalization of the Vieux Port was carried out under the direction of Norman Foster studio, landscape architect Michel Desvigne and local urban planners and architects. The work was conducted almost three years. As a result of this process, the city gained a new public space available for pedestrians, redesigned communication systems and built new public buildings such as museums and mirror Pavilion. MuCEM – Musée des Civilisations de l’Europe et de la Méditerranée is the new icon of the contemporary architecture. This building is an example of object which is situated flawlessly in the context of the surrounding.

Sieć miejskiej komunikacji szynowej w Marsylii składa się z dwóch linii tramwajowych i dwóch linii metra. To niewiele, jak na liczące 826 tyś. mieszkańców miasto i dużą aglomeracją miejską (ponad 1,5 min mieszkańców). W wyniku rozwoju motoryzacji sieć tramwajowa uległa likwidacji w latach 50. XX w. Dopiero na początku XXI w. doceniono ten środek transportu. Nad budową metra dyskutowano i analizowano kolejne projekty przez prawie 60 lat. Pierwszą linię metra otwarto dopiero w 1977 r.
