Research and documentation in connection with investigations of protection areas of Major Groundwater Basins (MGBs) and the establishment of disposable resources have been the most important regional projects in recent years. The degree of complexity of hydrogeological conditions and the need to consider a number of simplifications makes introduction of standard schematization principles difficult. Therefore it is necessary to focus on the maximum use of data and existing geoinformatic tools for the construction of three-dimensional regional models. After all, obtaining the most important and basic result of a flow net, we should base on the solution in the xyz coordinates and the analysis of equipotential lines and path-lines in the 3D space. T-type models are therefore doubtful and not suitable in MGBs recognition.

One of the important tasks of state policy is to protect groundwater against quantitative and qualitative degradation. Estimation of costs of establishing protection areas of MGBs is of crucial meaning taking into account the balance between the costs of prohibitions and restrictions and the benefits related to the value of protected groundwater resources. The costs have been evaluated on the basis of a legal opinion, where the key components are major prohibitions that take into account the assumptions of the Water Law, the Environmental Protection Act, and the Local Spatial Development Plans. The analysis was based on two MGBs located in the Central Odra region, characterized by different sizes, hydrogeological conditions and development, both of Quaternary age. The land cover and the development of the area are keyfactors influencing potential compensations and conflicts. The final results of the calculations with accuracy to the municipality have shown a strong dominance of the benefits of the existence and protection of both MGBs over the possible costs.

Preliminary valorisaion of the Major Groudwater Basins, including the assesment of groundwater useful properties, as well as necessity and order of protective measures (Paczyński, 2003) is a research project undertaken by Polish Geological Institute at the request of the Minister of Environment. The PGI performed an assessment of the MGBs taking into account a wide range of aspects and with use of various documentations, results of studies, publications, archival and cartographic data. The two years hydrogeological research was cartographically summarized in the Map of Preliminary Valorisation of the Major Groundwater Basins in 1 : 500,000 scale, which is another step in documenting the Major Groundwater Basins. The valorisation revealed that most of the documented MGBs urgently require establishing protective zones and that there is an pressing necessity of implementing and designating “Strategic Groundwater Basins”.
