The article attempted to discuss the problems related to the recultivation of post-mining lands, especially in the context of the possibility of creating ecologically sustainable lake-like water systems in these areas. In this view, the anthropogenic origin of Tarnobrzeg Lake can be a model example of eco-innovative recultivation activities of degraded post-mining lands. The case study of Tarnobrzeskie Lake indicates that, as a result of the implemented works, a stable and mature aquatic ecosystem with macrophyte orientation was created. Moreover, it turns out that the peculiar characteristics of macrophytic lakes now make them an optimal solution for newly designed reservoirs for tourist and recreational use in places of depleted post-mining depressions. The example of the recultivated areas after the decommissioned Machów mine encourages us to look at mining not only as an invasive human activity in the environment anymore, but also as an activity that enriches the landscape and environment with new, often unique morphological forms.

The paper reviews the mineral composition of the native sulphur deposit inTarnobrzeg, recognized in the now-defunct open-pit Machów mine. Mineral specimens from this mine are known and valued worldwide. The mineral inventory of the deposit is relatively undiversified. Its main minerals are calcite and native sulphur formed from bacterial reduction of gypsum. They are accompanied by accessory ones: celestine and barite, very rarely strontianite andaragonite. Rare hauerite is also found in overburden clays. Calcite, sulphur, gypsum, celestine and barite form several age generations in the deposit and many interesting morphological forms from which its history can be reconstructed. Most of the spectacularly formed specimens of these minerals are related to the exposure of the deposit and its mining exploitation. The youngest generation of gypsum also documents the initiated process of degradation of the deposit.
