During the period of 60 years, the mining and metallurgical industry has been developed to such extent that Poland is now among the worlds’major producers ofcopper and silver. The discovery, made on 23 March 1957 by a team of specialists from the Geological Institute under the leadership of Jan Wyżykowski, was followed by the preparation of the first geological documentation of the copper deposit, containing the results ofpioneering works that laid the foundation for the knowledge of the Fore-Sudetic Monocline geology. This discovery marked the beginning of the recognition of the deposit and gave rise to further exploration for prospective areas elsewhere in SW Poland. Later studies of numerous drill cores strongly indicate that the Zechstein copper-bearing series contains a very large volume of prognostic, prospective and hypothetical resources, rimming the oxidized Rote Fäule areas also outside the Lubin-Sieroszowice Copper District. Extensive deep exploration drilling is required to verify the resource potential in several prospects. The long-term challenges demand new solutions for the mining industry of the future within the EU, to enable the reindustrialization of Europe.

Rozpoznanie bogatej mineralizacji Au-Pt-Pd, w utworach utlenionych Rote Fäule dolnego cechsztynu (bezpośrednio poniżej miedziowo-srebrowej serii złożowej) w SW części złoża Lubin-Sieroszowice (kopalnia Polkowice Zachodnie), umożliwiło pobranie próbek wzorcowych. Pobrano dwie próbki utlenionego łupku miedzionośnego: POLK 1 (szare łupki ilaste) i POLK 2 (czerwone łupki dolomityczne). Oznaczeń dokonano metodą GF-AAS. Próbki wzorcowe cechują następujące średnie zawartości: POLK 1 - 738 ppb Au,381 ppb Pt, 209 ppb Pd: POLK 2 - 623 ppb Au, 291 ppb Pt i 23 7ppb Pd. Przewidziane są dalsze badania zawartości Au, Pt i Pd w celu uzyskania atestu zawartości.

Recognition of the rich Au-Pt-Pd mineralization in Lower Zechstein oxidised Rote Fdule sediments (immediately below Cu-Ag ore series) in SWpart of the Lubin-Sieroszowice deposit (Polkowice West mine) allowed a sampling of reference material. Two samples of the oxidised Kupferschiefer shales were collected: POLK 1 (grey clayshales) and POLK 2 (red dolomitic shales). Au, Pt and Pd abundances were determined by GF-AAS analysis. These reference samples have the following average values: POLK 1 - 738 ppb Au, 381 ppb Pt, 209 ppb Pd: POLK 2 - 623 ppb Au, 291 ppb Pt, and 23 7 ppb Pd. More analyses are needed before certificated contents oj Au, Pt, and Pd can be obtained.
