Katyń to w świadomości Polaków niemal symbol kojarzący się z ludobójczą polityką władz sowieckich wobec narodu polskiego. Wymordowanie w 1940 roku 21857 obywateli polskich – oficerów zawodowych i rezerwy Wojska Polskiego oraz Korpusu Ochrony Pogranicza, Straży Granicznej i Więziennej, funkcjonariuszy Policji Państwowej, Policji Województwa Śląskiego, bez żadnego sądu było ludobójstwem dokonanym na obywatelach polskich.

For the Polish people Katyń is almost a symbol associated with the genocidal policy of the soviet authorities towards the Polish nation. Murdering in 1940 21857 Polish citizens – the Polish Army and Border Protection Corps officers (both in active service and the reserves), Border Guard officers, and prison and police officers without any trial was an act of genocide committed against Polish citizens.

Siedemdziesiąta rocznica zbrodni katyńskiej to właściwy moment na przypomnienie miejsca i roli tego wydarzenia w dziejach Polskiej Marynarki Wojennej. Artykuł oparty jest na wynikach najnowszych badań przedmiotowych. Na podstawie zweryfikowanych materiałów źródłowych ukazano losy marynarzy na wschodnich rubieżach Rzeczypospolitej we wrześniu 1939 roku, sposób ich traktowania w sowieckich obozach jenieckich oraz listę oficerów Marynarki Wojennej zamordowanych w Katyniu i Charkowie.

The seventy anniversary of Katyń’s crime seems to be the right moment to remind the place and role of the crime mentioned in the history of Polish Navy. This tragic but still not well known part of Polish Navy’s history is a subject of this paper. Based on archive materials the author shows the history of seamen on the eastern border of Polish Republic in September 1939. The way the seamen were treated in soviet prisoner of war camps and the list of the names of Polish Navy’s officers murdered in Katyń and Charków are also presented in the paper.

The author has carried out a systematic review and evaluation of selective stages of historical research on Katyń genocide in the last 60 years. He has discussed all the most important texts concerning this issue published both in Poland and abroad basing them in a broad historical and political background. He has analysed largely the Soviet and the socalled people’s democratic countries, Polish People’s Republic’s including first of all, propaganda attempts to conceal the true perpetrators. He has stressed the crucial importance of opening Soviet archives for the Katyń genocide research. He has underlined that many documents essential to recreate the „crime technology” itself, the prisoners’-of-war indoctrination process still remains unavailable.
