The COVID-19 pandemic caused unprecedented disruptions in the global economy, and container transport as a predominant means of the goods flow in global supply chains. Different measures employed worldwide to limit the virus spread, such as restrictions and quarantines on border crossings, port staff, container ships, transhipment terminals and the inland transport sector, created a colossal management challenge and caused a domino effect in delays. Consequently, it led to blank sailings and enormous rises in freight transport prices, the lack of supply reliability and shifts between different means of transport. These delays, enhanced by the Suez Canal blockage, exacerbated an already acute problem of the empty container shortage in the market. This paper aims to provide an in-depth overview of the COVID-19 pandemic’s impact on container transport and underline ways to increase resiliency against future disruptions. The research included a literature overview and formulation of recommendations. The paper contributes to the broad research of container transport management and provides insights for practitioners responsible for transport planning and disruption management.

Pierwszy tunel pod Kanałem Sueskim oddano do użytku jeszcze w 1981 r. Po 37 latach Egipt doczekał się otwarcia dwóch tuneli, a rok później kolejnych dwóch. W 2020 r. wydrążono jeszcze jeden obiekt, którym przejazd będzie możliwy w 2021 r.

Jedna z największych i najważniejszych inwestycji hydrotechnicznych Egiptu ostatnich lat dobiegła końca. 29 lipca 2015 r. sfinalizowano prace nad Nowym Kanałem Sueskim, a tydzień później, 6 sierpnia, powstałym w rekordowym tempie szlakiem przepłynął pierwszy statek. Egipskie władze upatrują w zakończonym przedsięwzięciu nadziei na ożywienie gospodarcze pogrążonego w stagnacji kraju.

One of the largest and most important hydraulic engineering projects of Egypt in recent years has come to an end. On 29 July 2015 the work on the New Suez Canal was, completed, and a week later, on August 6, the first vessel sailed along the route built in a record time. Egyptian authorities perceive the newly completed project as a hope of economic recovery for the country mired in stagnation.

Zbudowany w latach 1859-1869 Kanał Sueski połączył basen Morza Śródziemnego, poprzez Morze Czerwone, z wodami Oceanu Indyjskiego. Skracał o połowę drogę z portów europejskich do Indii. Stał się jednym z najważniejszych ogniw w światowym Systemie dróg morskich. W jego powstaniu mieli swój udział także polscy inżynierowie. W I połowie XIX w. możliwości budowy kanału przez Przesmyk Sueski badali Józef Łazowski i Tomasz Bartmański. Współpracownikiem twórcy Kanału, Ferdynanda Lessepsa, był od 1864 roku Stanisław Janicki, który nadzorował prace przy budowie północnego odcinka Kanału. Pracami konserwatorskimi podczas eksploatacji nowej drogi wodnej kierował Mieczysław Geniusz.

Built in years 1859-1869 Sues Canal built in years 1859-1869 connected the Mediterranean Sea and the Red Sea with the Indian Ocean. It reduced the distance from European harbours to India. The Canal became one of the most important link in the world system of sea routes. The Polish builders took part m its construction. In the first part of 19 century the possibilities to build a canal through the Sues Isthmus had been explored by Józef Łazowski and Tomasz Bartmański. From 1864 Stanisław Janicki was the collaborator of Sues Canal creator, Ferdynand Lessepse. He supervised works of the northern section of the Canal. The other one, Mieczysław Geniusz run the preservation works while exploitation of the new water route.
