This article contains results of studies on the applicability of data from Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) for the purposes of geographical studies regarding the spatial mobility of inhabitants within a big city. The article focuses on the option of applying two types of sub-systems – induction loops and automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) – and includes examples of analyses based on the resulting data, which can serve as a basis for mobility studies. The area on the example of which the capabilities of application of ITS data have been presented is Lodz – a large city in central Poland. The conducted research shows that ITS systems offer an enormous potential in providing data for spatial mobility studies. In order to fully exploit its worth, however, it is imperative to expand the research procedure by including, for instance, the results of qualitative research. Also, the interpretation of results obtained on the basis of ITS data ought to be performed with an awareness of numerous significant preliminary and simplifying assumptions.

The article presents the essential issues and algorithm of the methodology of a four-step transportation model, which was constructed in order to carrying out a household interview survey. The results of this research are source data for determining the travel behaviour of the users of transportation systems, including intelligent transport systems (ITS). The presented issues regarding the survey methodology also concern the specifics of the study area, an urban agglomeration area. The examples particularly relate to an urban agglomeration with the nature of a conurbation, namely, the Upper Silesian Agglomeration in Poland.

Po zakończeniu projektu wdrożenia systemu ITS we Wrocławiu, warto zadać sobie pytanie, czy dostarczone narzędzie osiągnęło wyznaczony cel i spełniło stawiane oczekiwania? Wrocław, jako miasto będące tuż po wdrożeniu ITS, stało się w Polsce bardzo cennym punktem referencyjnym w przedmiotowym temacie. Skala systemu pod względem zastosowanych w jednej inwestycji kilkunastu zintegrowanych ze sobą podsystemów informatycznych, które są zasilane w dane dostarczone z ponad trzech tysięcy urządzeń rozlokowanych na terenie całego miasta i włączenia do systemu blisko 70% istniejących w mieście sygnalizacji świetlnych, a także obszerność określonych dla niego funkcji kluczowych, z pewnością sprawiają, że Wrocław obecnie jest najlepszym w kraju kompendium wiedzy praktycznej w sprawie ITS. Dlatego powinniśmy dzielić się swoim doświadczeniem z innymi miastami i nieść odpowiedź dla pojawiających się wątpliwości miast i gmin podejmującym decyzję o przystąpieniu do niezwykle skomplikowanej i kosztownej inwestycji, jaką jest wdrożenie ITS.

After the completion of the project implementation of ITS in Wroclaw, it is worth asking whether the supplied tool has reached the target and met the expectations placed? Wroclaw, a city which is just after the implementation of ITS in Poland has become a very valuable reference point in this topic. Scale of the system in terms of investment used in one of several integrated with each other subsystems that are supplied with data provided from more than three thousand units deployed throughout the city and integrate nearly 70% of the existing traffic lights in the city, as well as the breadth defined for him function key, make sure that Wroclaw is now the best in the country compendium of practical knowledge on ITS. Therefore, we should share his experience with other cities and bring answers to emerging concerns of cities and municipalities makers to proceed with an extremely complex and costly investment, which is the deployment of ITS.
