The basic functionality of control data ma)' be increased through the use of software modules, which allows for an optimisation of the process. If it is necessary to implement this increase of functionality in new control data, or to implement it in the overlying control, one must factor in a significant effort for the formatting of the relevant data interfaces, which in turn implies a high investment. This paper proposes the implementation of a data layer between the module and control data. This control-specific formatting to the interfaces of the control data will be taken over by this data layer, while the incoming data formats will be converted into a configurable data model through mapping, adjustment with parameters and/or data modelling. This model may now be accessed in the data layer, and allows for a universal access to the process data, independent of the control data and manufacturer of the software. Functional modules, which use the data layer, will thus be independent of the control data and its interface.
