Outdoor lighting is an important element in creating an evening and nocturnal image of urban spaces. Properly designed and constructed lighting installations provide residents with comfort and security. One way to improve the energy efficiency of road lighting installation is to replace the electromagnetic control gear (ECG) with electronic ballasts (EB). The main purpose of this article is to provide an in-depth comparative analysis of the energy efficiency and performance of HPS lamps with ECG and EB. It will compare their performance under sinusoidal and nonsinusoidal voltage supply conditions for the four most commonly used HPS lamps of 70 W, 100 W, 150 W, and 250 W. The number of luminaires supplied from one circuit was determined based on the value of permissible active power losses. With the use of the DIALux program, projects of road lighting installation were developed. On this basis, energy performance indicators, electricity consumption, electricity costs, and CO 2 emissions were calculated for one-phase and three-phase installations. The obtained results indicate that an HPS lamp with EB is better than an HPS lamp with ECG in terms of energy quality, energy savings, and environmental impact. The results of this analysis are expected to assist in the choice of HPS lighting technology.

In this paper, several high power lighting networks based on high pressures sodium (HPS) lamps with rated lamp powers of 70, 150 and 250 W have been set up. Those lamps have been studied with both electromagnetic and dimmable electronic ballasts, which can dim the lamp output smoothly and uniformly. Lamps connected to electronic equipment have been tested with different levels of power using dimming for a 220 V power supply. HPS lamps have been chosen because they are used in public lighting. This paper focuses on the harmonic characterization of modern HPS lamps connected to both types of devices. Harmonics under full and reduced power for several HPS lamps have been measured. It presents an investigation on the attenuation effect and a proposal of an index called the equivalent lamp index to characterize this effect on HPS lamps. Also it is concluded that using a combination of HPS lamps can result in a reduction of the current distortion.

Analizowano system oświetleniowy wykorzystujący lampy sodowe. Badano lampy obciążone układami elektronicznymi i elektromagnetycznymi do sterowania jasnością. Zmierzono zawartość harmonicznych przy pełnej i ograniczonej mocy. Zaproponowano metody redukcji zniekształcenia prądu.

Badano wpływ doświetlania rozsady pomidora lampami metalohalogenkowymi (MH) i wysokoprężnymi lampami sodowymi (WLS) na wybrane parametry fizjologiczne roślin. Do badań wzięto dwie odmiany pomidora szklarniowego: Admiro F1 - średnioowocowa i Starbuck F1 - wielkoowocowa.

The effect of metal-halide (MH) and high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps supplementary lighting on selected physiological parameters of tomato plants seedlings were evaluated. For the study there was taken two cultivars of greenhouse tomato: 'Admiro' F1 - medium-sized fruit and large size fruit 'Starbuck' F1. The study was conducted in the greenhouse where the average daily solar radiation was 305 J cm-2. Plants were lighted for 16 hours per day, half of plants with 400 W MH lamps which spectrum was optimized for plant photosynthesis response and half with HPS lamps (GE Lucalox 400 W).Gas exchange parameters of leaves, chlorophyll and dry matter content in leaves were studied. Plants lighted with HPS lamps were characterized by higher gas exchange rate than ones lighted with MH lamps. MH lamps usage resulted larger amount of chlorophyll In leaves of 'Admiro' F1 in comparison with the HPS lamps. Significantly more of dry matter was in leaves of both tested cultivars when lighted with MH lamps comparing to HPS.
